Two agents of Spain's National Intelligence Center (CNI) were arrested on suspicion of sharing information with the United States at the request of an investigating judge. Defense Minister Margarita Robles and two other members of Spain's cabinet later confirmed the information but did not provide details.

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, a Socialist, has often criticized Washington's foreign policy. Speaking to foreign reporters, Sanchez avoided criticizing the US over the spying allegations, but stressed that the case was "disturbing".

Meanwhile, Spanish government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria said that the Spanish national intelligence agency had reported the officers to prosecutors and assured the government of its full cooperation in the investigation. It is not clear what information the two agents passed to the US and US officials have not commented.
