Hundreds of houses in Ha Trung were submerged in water, people evacuated their belongings and pets to the dike to avoid the flood.

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Due to the impact of storm No. 5, along with the rising water level of the Len River, many villages in Ha Trung commune (Thanh Hoa) were flooded. Hundreds of houses here were submerged in floodwaters, seriously affecting people's lives.

Recorded on the afternoon of August 27 in the villages of Chue Cau, Binh Lam, Tuong Lac (Ha Trung commune, Thanh Hoa ), floodwaters rose so high that only the roofs of many houses could be seen.

Along the dike through the villages of Chue Cau and Binh Lam, the households have become makeshift shelters. The tents are built with tarpaulin and are roughly covered to shelter from the rain and wind.

In the village, many houses were surrounded by water on all sides, people had to use small boats to transport belongings, bring children, the elderly and women out.

According to the quick statistics of the People's Committee of Ha Trung commune on August 27, the whole commune recorded 158 houses flooded under 1 meter with 472 people having to evacuate on the spot. More seriously, up to 687 houses were flooded from 1 to 3 meters deep, forcing 1,547 people to evacuate, mainly in Binh Lam, Chue Cau, and Tuong Lac villages. People were evacuated to high-rise buildings and places designated and arranged by local authorities.

The entire Ha Trung commune currently has 108.9 hectares of rice and 15.2 hectares of vegetables flooded, with a high risk of total loss if the flooding continues. Many areas of crops have been severely damaged and are no longer able to be restored. The rapidly rising floodwaters have also forced many households to evacuate to ensure their safety.

Mr. Hoang Van Mao, a resident of Binh Lam village, said: “The water started rising yesterday morning, August 26, and by late afternoon it was heavily flooded, and the electricity in the village was also cut off. Since then, people have had to use boats and canoes to travel, transport belongings and rescue the remaining livestock in the flooded area.”

The floodwaters rose 3-4 meters high, over the fences and pillars. Groups of young men had to hurriedly row boats back and forth to transport necessities and belongings.

Property and livestock of the people were also greatly damaged. In Binh Lam village, Mr. Nguyen Van Son sadly said: “My family lost nearly 200 chickens, 2 fish ponds were swept away, the total damage is estimated at about 300 - 400 million VND. All the savings are now considered lost”.

Meanwhile, in Chue Cau village, Mrs. Pham Thi Quyen said in a daze: “My entire house, TV, refrigerator and family farm were submerged in water. When the water started to rise, the whole family only had time to carry the chicks and lead the pigs to higher ground.”

Many old people sat quietly next to piles of luggage, their eyes looking towards the house submerged in water.

Herds of livestock including pigs, chickens, and ducks were also moved up the dike by people and locked in temporary pens to escape the flood.

Along the dike, wet clothes were hung up to dry, gas stoves, pots and pans were brought up to temporarily cook. The deep floodwaters made people's lives extremely difficult in terms of clean water, the environment was polluted, and the risk of disease increased.

Currently, the Ha Trung commune government has been actively implementing measures to support people to overcome the consequences. Local authorities and organizations have mobilized vehicles and human resources to evacuate people in a timely manner, while providing essential necessities such as food, clean water, blankets, etc. to households that are being evacuated.
