The Netherlands had a spectacular comeback on the opening day of EURO 2024, when they defeated Poland with a score of 2-1.

The "Orange Storm" conceded the first goal in the 16th minute after a high header from Adam Buksa. However, two goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst helped the Netherlands snatch victory and temporarily take the lead in Group D, before France and Austria face each other in the late match.

Coach Ronald Koeman affirmed: "Everything is fine. The match ended in a positive direction for the Netherlands. We played very well in the first 60 minutes, created many opportunities, but conceded a goal from a set piece and let Poland take the lead. I don't remember how many opportunities the Netherlands created. The players must know how to seize the opportunity."

The Dutch team had 20 shots (twice as many as Poland), but Cody Gakpo, Memphis Depay, Xavi Simons and Virgil van Dijk all missed. Coach Koeman emphasized: "The Netherlands deserved to win more than that. I emphasize: The Netherlands played at a high level, creating many opportunities. We should have won 4-1 in the first 60 minutes."

Cody Gakpo, voted best player of the match, affirmed that the Netherlands had overcome a very difficult challenge.

"It was a tough game against a tough opponent. Poland scoring first made it more difficult for us. However, the Netherlands created many scoring opportunities. The Netherlands had to be more careful, but overall, we played well. The Netherlands will never give up," the Liverpool star affirmed.

Coach Ronald Koeman had a "near miss" victory

Poland is currently at the bottom of the table, but the team nicknamed "The White Eagles" still has a chance if they win at least 3 points in the remaining 2 matches.

Poland coach Michał Probierz stressed: "Thanks to the Polish fans, both those who came to the stadium to support the team and those who watched on TV. As for this match, I told the players that at some points they did not control the ball long enough, nor did they put enough pressure. It is really a pity, because Poland could have played that way.

The Polish team will not give up. We have to do everything possible to win both remaining matches (against France and Austria). The players can be even stronger. Poland can be aggressive, close to the opponent and organize the team."
