Vietnam Navy trains torpedo and live ammunition firing at sea

Naval Region 1 conducted training and testing of live ammunition, using guns and artillery in service to destroy targets in the air and at sea during the day and at night, and practiced firing torpedoes in the waters of Quang Ninh.

Information from Naval Region 1 (Navy, Ministry of National Defense ) said that on October 2-3 in the Quang Ninh sea area, the unit organized training and live-fire testing for ship units, including firing mock torpedoes at sea. Colonel Phan Tien Bao, Deputy Commander of Region 1 and Colonel Vu Huu Kiem, Deputy Political Commissar of Region 1 directed and monitored officers and soldiers of the unit performing their tasks.

During the training and inspection session, the ship squadrons of Brigade 169 and Brigade 170 (Naval Region 1) conducted live-fire tests on exercises 5a and 5b, using guns and artillery in service to destroy targets in the air and at sea during the day and at night, and practiced firing mock torpedoes.

To achieve the best results in the inspection, the units thoroughly grasped and strictly followed the plan from above, made good preparations in all aspects, organized training to master shooting exercises and carried out Party and political activities to build high motivation and determination for the troops.

The type of torpedo used by Naval Region 1 for training is 53PA. The torpedo specifications were announced at the National Achievements Exhibition. Accordingly, the 53PA torpedo is a gas-powered torpedo with a homing head, a combined explosive device, and underwater movement; used to destroy surface ships, surface submarines, and enemy floating structures. The 53PA torpedo has a diameter of 533.4 mm, a length of 7.9 m, and a weight of 1.9 tons (containing 210 kg of explosives). The maximum firing range of the torpedo is 11 km, and the speed is 29 nautical miles/hour. The operating depth when firing in combat ranges from 6 - 8 m, and the searching mode is from 12 - 16 m. The compressed air volume equipped for the torpedo is 745 liters, ensuring stable operation during movement and attack.

During the shooting practice, the ship formations and combat crews coordinated closely, flexibly handled situations, hit and shot well at targets, ensuring absolute safety.

The test aims to evaluate the level of command organization, the ability to master weapons and equipment, and the ability to coordinate and cooperate of officers and soldiers on naval ships. In the photo, the 356 and 357 fleets of Brigade 170 practice shooting and destroying aerial targets.
