Ca Mau's largest freshwater lake to be completed in May

After many delays, the 102-hectare reservoir project will be completed by the end of May, helping to provide clean water to more than 11,000 households in U Minh district.

The information was announced by Mr. Phan Hoang Vu, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province, at a press conference on April 9.

The lake has a capacity of 3.85 million m3 of water, started construction in early 2022 in Khanh An commune, and has so far completed 82% of the contract volume. The project belongs to the Mekong Delta Integrated Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Project, with ODA loans from the World Bank.

According to the plan, the lake was to be completed in mid-2023, but due to weak geological foundation, the project had to adjust its design to suit future operations and exploitation. After four adjustments, the project contract value is about 248 billion VND, not exceeding the total approved investment.

Upon completion, the project will provide domestic water for local people, reduce groundwater exploitation, prevent land subsidence and serve to prevent and fight forest fires in the dry season. The lake will also bring fresh water from the Hau River to serve domestic water and production in Tran Van Thoi and Thoi Binh districts and Khanh An industrial park... These are areas that have suffered from drought in the dry season this year.

Over the past month, drought has affected production and the lives of many people in the Mekong Delta, concentrated in Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh , Ca Mau... Many localities have had to hire barges to transport fresh water to people.

Representatives of the National Center for Hydrometeorology said the heat wave will last for nearly 10 more days. The rainy season in the western provinces will start around May 20, 10-15 days later than the same period last year.
