Canary flowers in full bloom, a new destination for tourists

At the end of September, the mountain slopes in Chu Dang Ya ( Gia Lai ) are lit up by the brilliant red color of canna flowers, creating a scene that is both wild and brilliant, making anyone who sets foot here feel like they are lost in a vivid natural picture.

From the foot of the mountain to the high hillsides, rows of galangal flowers bloom straight, adorning this land with a rustic but attractive beauty.

Ms. Vong Thi Huyen (1990, Gia Lai) - photographer - has spent a lot of time recording the beauty of her homeland. She said that cassava is the livelihood of local people, grown for starch and to make vermicelli.

When the season comes, the flowers bloom bright red, making the whole mountain glow. That simple yet brilliant scene makes her and many others unable to stop taking pictures.

"From Pleiku center to Chu Dang Ya is only about 19km, the road is quite easy, visitors hardly need to prepare much, just come to breathe fresh air and immerse themselves in nature," she said.

Ms. Huyen added that, not only the landscape, the flower season also creates more livelihoods for the people. At the foot of the mountain, tourists can hire children to be "little guides" to explore , or sit on the back of a local motorbike for about 50,000 VND/person to reach the top of the mountain.

Chu Dang Ya, located in the old Chu Dang Ya commune (now Bien Ho commune, Gia Lai province), is a volcano that has been inactive for millions of years. The crater is funnel-shaped, about 500m above sea level. Chu Dang Ya volcano is hidden in the middle of a majestic green forest.

If starting from Pleiku Lake, visitors go about 20km further to reach the foot of the mountain. The road is quite convenient, easy to access by motorbike or car.

The canna flower season usually starts from September and lasts until mid-October. This is also the time when the climate is cool and fresh, suitable for combining cloud hunting in the early morning or watching the sunset.

In addition to the red color of the dong rieng, Chu Dang Ya is also famous for its wild sunflower season in November that lasts throughout the mountainside. For many years, this place has also been a place to organize mountain climbing experiences and a unique wild sunflower festival.

Standing on the funnel-shaped crater, visitors can look out over the vast fields and feel the vastness, peace and tranquility.

Potential for Gia Lai tourism development after merger

According to the Department of Tourism, after merging Gia Lai and Binh Dinh, the new province possesses the richest tourism ecosystem in the Central Highlands - Central region, with sea, mountains, forests, and cultural heritage.

This combination opens up opportunities to create integrated tourism products, from Quy Nhon beach to Chu Dang Ya volcano, from gong culture to Binh Dinh traditional martial arts.

During the recent September 2nd holiday, Gia Lai welcomed more than 293,000 visitors, with revenue reaching 623 billion VND - a number that shows the increasingly strong attraction of this land.

Many experts say that Gia Lai has potential for diverse and rich natural and cultural resources, which is an opportunity to diversify products, from eco-tourism, community tourism, to green tourism, healing and health care.

In particular, the Central Highlands gong culture - a UNESCO heritage - along with the unique system of volcanic relics and landscapes are the Gia Lai brand that can be promoted internationally.

Gia Lai province has identified green tourism development as an inevitable trend, in line with natural conditions and local culture. Therefore, new tourism projects must adhere to the principles of respecting the environment, preserving landscapes and identity, protecting forests and water resources, and creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.

The local government has also launched the tourism message "3K - no price hikes, no price gouging; no competition for customers; no pollution" and "3A - traffic safety; food hygiene and safety; safety of life and property", demonstrating the determination to build the image of a friendly and sustainable destination.

With the orientation to 2030, vision to 2050, Gia Lai is establishing its position as the "new tourism growth pole" of the region, where a season of bright red dong rieng flowers can also become a brand attracting tourists from all over.
