On the afternoon of September 30, the People's Committee of Kim Ngan commune ( Quang Tri province) confirmed that all 75 boarding students of the school did not attend class in the morning session of the same day after the poisoning incident.
Of the 75 students, 40 were poisoned and were discharged from the hospital on the afternoon of September 29, and 35 were in the same boarding kitchen but showed no signs of poisoning. They were all in grades 3, 4, and 5 and were children of the Van Kieu ethnic group.
According to many parents whose children are currently eating at school, the reason they do not send their children back to school is because they are not comfortable with the school kitchen.
"My child came home and told us that many meals were unhygienic and he had a stomachache. Now dozens of children have been poisoned and have had to go to the hospital. We don't feel comfortable letting them continue to eat there," said a Van Kieu parent in Kim Ngan.
Regarding this matter, the leader of Kim Ngan Commune People's Committee said that he had directed the Department of Culture and Society to coordinate with the school's board of directors to directly inspect and find out the cause, and at the same time encourage parents to bring their children back to school so that their studies are not interrupted.
Previously, 40 students of the school were hospitalized due to food poisoning after eating banh tay (a type of cake made from sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves) for breakfast. Many students said that banh tay had a sour smell and was watery when eaten.
Many times before, students had eaten this type of bread for breakfast and also had stomach aches but not enough to have to go to the hospital.
