Vietnamese students won 1 gold medal and 4 silver medals at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the Vietnamese team participating in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in 2025 won 1 gold medal and 4 silver medals.

The owner of the IPhO 2025 gold medal is Nguyen The Quan, a 12th grade student at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An .

The students in this year's team that won silver medals were Ly Ba Khoi and Truong Duc Dung, 12th graders from the High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences (Hanoi National University); Nguyen Cong Vinh, 12th grader from Bac Ninh High School for Gifted Students, Bac Ninh; and Tran Le Thien Nhan, 12th grader from Quoc Hoc Hue High School for Gifted Students, Hue City.

With this result, the Vietnamese student delegation is in the top 10 countries with the highest results at IPhO 2025.

The 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2025) will be held in the French Republic from July 17 to 25, 2025, with the participation of 94 delegations (including 5 observer delegations) from 94 countries and territories, and 406 contestants.

The IPhO 2025 exam consists of two official exam days: one day of theory exam and one day of practical exam, each exam has a duration of 5 hours.

The theoretical and experimental exams demonstrate a subtle combination of modern physics and close-to-life real-world phenomena – from the structure of hydrogen atoms to galactic structures, from magnet oscillations to crater formation.

The problem of creating bubbles in a glass of champagne not only has profound physical significance (related to pressure, acoustics, viscous friction...) but is also a unique cultural highlight, bringing French culinary tradition into the IPhO exam.

The experimental test consisted of two problems, requiring synthetic thinking and precise measurement skills; one of which involved "landing and safely moving the rover to avoid getting bogged down in sand dunes on the surface of Mars".

The remaining entry used a Gouy balance to measure magnetic moments – and was a meaningful tribute to the French physicist Louis Georges Gouy, who made many contributions to the study of magnetism and optics, and paid tribute to France's scientific heritage at an international competition held in his homeland.
