Reviving Han Nom documents over 100 years old in the ancient capital of Hue

(Dan Tri) - Han Nom documents in Hue are facing the risk of loss due to weather damage and poor preservation. Experts are reviving them by processing and digitizing them for preservation and storage.

For many years, the race against time to revive Han Nom documents has been quietly carried out by a group of experts who are staff of the Thua Thien Hue General Library in coordination with relevant units.

Up to this point, more than 500,000 pages of Han Nom documents have been collected and digitized. This work has been carried out in more than 200 villages, nearly 1,000 clans and palaces in Hue. The documents include royal decrees, decrees, royal orders, genealogies, land registers, population registers, diplomas, administrative documents, literature books, history books, medical books, village conventions, funeral orations, etc.

Through many processes, these documents were classified, treated for damage, photocopied and carefully stored, and donated to the places the delegation visited for digitization. Many important documents were selected for exhibition and printed books to introduce to the public.

According to research experts, Han Nom documents are considered a heritage, a message connecting the past with the present. Preserving this heritage plays an important role, helping future generations better understand the historical and cultural origins of the nation.

Hue is known for its massive royal Han Nom heritage system. In addition, this land also has many other Han Nom documents in hundreds of villages, clans, and private homes.

Han Nom documents showing signs of damage are processed by experts according to a scientific and methodical process. This work is not only time-consuming but also requires meticulousness and passion from the person doing it.

Before starting to process and digitize Han Nom documents, villages often organize a traditional ceremony to report to ancestors such as a sacrificial ceremony, procession and opening of the storage box.

According to experts, the research, survey, collection and digitization of Han Nom documents in recent times has helped many people understand more deeply about the land of Thua Thien Hue and contributed to the study of Vietnam in the medieval period.
