More than 1.41 million new securities accounts opened in 8 months from the beginning of 2024

New accounts opened by domestic investors continued to increase last August. In the first 8 months of 2024, domestic investors opened a total of more than 1.41 million new securities accounts, 3.6 times higher than the whole year of 2023.

The total number of securities accounts of domestic and foreign investors at the end of August was more than 8.7 million, equivalent to 8.74% of Vietnam's population.

According to information from the Vietnam Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation (VSDC), the number of net domestic individual investor accounts opened, calculated based on the difference between newly opened and closed accounts, reached 330,819 accounts in August 2024. The above figure increased slightly compared to 329,836 accounts in July 2024, and is also the second consecutive month with higher new accounts opened than the previous month. At the same time, this is also the month with the largest number of newly opened securities accounts since June 2022 (466,071 accounts).

The number of new accounts opened by domestic individual investors last month was more than three times higher than in June. Meanwhile, domestic organizations opened 131 new securities accounts in August, 7 accounts less than the previous month.

In the first 8 months of the year, domestic investors opened a total of more than 1.41 million new securities accounts, 3.6 times higher than the whole of 2023 (the year with the highest number of account closures). Domestic investors currently have a total of nearly 8.66 million securities accounts (individuals account for 99.8%).

Regarding foreign investors, the number of new accounts opened in August was 255, an increase of 38 accounts compared to the previous month. Of which, foreign individual investors opened 262 new accounts, an increase of 58%. Domestic institutional investors closed a net of 7 accounts. After the first 8 months of 2024, foreign investors opened a total of 1,620 new accounts, equal to 61% compared to the whole year of 2023.

Domestic individual investors continued to open new securities accounts strongly in August despite the gloomy general market trading context. The total average trading value per session on the three exchanges reached VND18,580 trillion in August. In terms of order matching alone, the average trading value per session was VND16,516 billion, down 4.4% compared to the average in July and down 25.6% compared to the average in the past 5 months.

VN-Index recovered in August when it increased by 2.6% compared to July. Foreign investors net sold 3,611.2 billion VND, of which they net sold 3,087.8 billion VND in matched transactions. Meanwhile, individuals net sold after 6 consecutive months of net buying with 3,627.6 billion VND, of which they net sold 1,128.1 billion VND. Self-employed investors net bought 1,836.3 billion VND, of which they net bought 1,941.5 billion VND in matched transactions. Domestic institutional investors net bought 5,402.4 billion VND, of which they net bought 2,274.4 billion VND in matched transactions.
