Mr. Do Dinh Nam (25 years old, Dien Xa, Nam Truc, Nam Dinh ) commented like that about the bonsai tree shaping profession.
Despite his young age, Nam has been in this profession for more than 7 years. According to Nam, being born and raised in a famous bonsai village, his passion for bonsai has been in his blood since he was a child. However, it was not until after finishing high school that he decided to follow his passion.
His first teacher was his father, Nam started with pruning leaves and doing odd jobs for his father. Just a few months later, Nam could create valuable bonsai products himself.
“The first bonsai trees I created were from bamboo trees, buying the original blanks for only a few tens of thousands of dong, but after a few steps of shaping, these trees all had souls and their value increased many times, some trees were worth up to a million dong,” said Mr. Nam.
Starting to earn his first money from his passion, Mr. Nam became more and more passionate about the job, determined to explore and learn. From small, low-value trees, Mr. Nam was able to make bigger trees, worth hundreds of millions to billions of VND.
From selling bonsai products, Mr. Nam has a fairly high and stable income.
In the 100m2 yard that Mr. Nam calls "Thanh Nam Garden House", countless bonsai trees from star fruit, cypress, fig, la han pine... are displayed everywhere, all of which are works made by Mr. Nam himself.
Not satisfied with his passion for his small garden, in recent years, Mr. Nam started to show off his self-made works on social media platforms. Unexpectedly, many people with the same passion welcomed and ordered them, Mr. Nam had an additional stable source of income from the profession of shaping bonsai trees.
“The job is quite busy, each livestream selling session, I can earn an average of 5 to 10 million VND. From there, each month I can earn about 50 million VND from selling bonsai products. That is a large amount of money, enough for me to support my passion and my family's personal needs,” Nam shared.
Bonsai works increase in value many times after passing through the hands of the stylist.
According to Mr. Nam, nowadays there are many young people like him who choose bonsai making as a profession to make a living, because if you really love it and spend time on it, this profession can give you a pretty good income.
Meanwhile, as someone who has been working as a bonsai tree designer for more than 10 years, Mr. Vu Minh Phuc (35 years old, Dien Xa, Nam Truc, Nam Dinh) said that for him, bonsai tree designing is not only to "earn a living" but also to satisfy his great passion.

“Each bonsai work created from when it was still loose, lush and wild is the passion of the craftsman. Rain or shine, sad or happy, we make friends with the tree. Shaping, admiring, and trimming until the tree becomes a beautiful work is a priceless reward. Every time I have a satisfactory work, I can lose sleep and eat, thinking and talking about it all day long,” said Mr. Phuc.
Bonsai profession brings good income.
According to Mr. Phuc, a few years ago, a beautiful bonsai could help people like him build a house or buy a car. Bonsai shaping really brought a good income to him and the people in the bonsai craft village.
Talking about the process of creating a bonsai from start to finish, Mr. Phuc said that the craftsman will have to choose the embryo and the tree breed. In this step, perennial trees with rough trunks and unique curved trunks will be given priority. Next, the craftsman will come up with ideas, prune the branches and use steel wire to shape the tree.
More and more young people choose to become bonsai designers.
The final stage is finishing the tree, which is also the longest stage. The worker will have to wait for the right time from several months to years to shape the tree to his desire. After many times like that, the shape of the tree will stabilize, be completed and brought to the market.
“It is not easy to create a work of art. It takes a lot of time. If you are not passionate about it, you really cannot do it,” said Mr. Phuc.
Due to the economic efficiency of bonsai shaping, in recent years, many people in Dien Xa commune and neighboring localities have begun to explore and develop the profession, many of whom have been awarded the title of artisan. People here often call it the profession: "Turning passion, leaves and soil into money".
