From November 22 to 24 in Soc Trang , Can Tho University coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang province to organize a knowledge training course for over 50 students representing cooperatives and shrimp farming households from the Western provinces to become professional shrimp farmers.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai - Vice Rector of Can Tho University - said that during the 3-day training, the university's lecturers conveyed the main contents, including issues on high-tech shrimp farming principles, environmental issues, shrimp nutrition and health; research on green energy issues, digital transformation, circular economy , agricultural and aquatic ecotourism; principles of climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta.

According to Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang province, training in shrimp farming techniques is carried out regularly and continuously by the unit, but this is the first time shrimp farmers in the West have been equipped with in-depth knowledge to become professional shrimp farmers.

Ms. Binh said that Soc Trang's shrimp farming area is not large, only about 50,000 hectares, but thanks to intensive farming investment and high technology application, the output is quite high, over 200,000 tons/year.

“Achieved productivity and stable raw shrimp sources help processing plants be more proactive. It is expected that this year's shrimp export turnover of Soc Trang will continue to reach over 1 billion USD, accounting for about 25% of the country's turnover,” Ms. Binh informed.

According to Ms. Binh, professionalizing shrimp farmers in Soc Trang in particular and the provinces in the region in general will help them gain more practical experience, suitable for the new context.

“When professionalized, it will help people improve their capacity and contribute to effectively handling problems arising in the development of shrimp farming. At that time, shrimp export turnover can reach a higher number, not stopping at 4 billion USD as it is now,” said Ms. Binh.
