Indonesia puts into operation two floating hospitals to serve people on remote islands.

The 130m long Laksamana Malahayati has a helipad and 200 hospital beds, fully equipped with medical facilities and infrastructure, including operating rooms, laboratories, and X-ray rooms.

On June 10, the Indonesian Ministry of Transport inaugurated two floating hospitals, Laksamana Malahayati (Admiral Malahayati) and Kapal Kesehatan Rakyat (People's Floating Hospital ).

Speaking at the ceremony held at Tanjung Priok port, north of the capital Jakarta, Indonesian Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the opening of the two floating hospitals is to serve people on remote islands .

According to Mr. Budi, the first hospital ship was named after Malahayati, the leader of the Inong Bale force that fought against colonial rule around the 16th century and was awarded the title of national hero by the Indonesian state in November 2017.

Mr Budi stressed that the operations of Laksamana Malahayati and Kapal Kesehatan Rakyat are very important because Indonesia is a large archipelagic country, with water covering two-thirds of its territory. The country needs to build more similar vessels to serve remote island areas.

With a team of nine medical staff and 12 crew members, the hospital ship can handle a number of surgeries such as cleft lip and palate and cataract surgeries, according to the Laksamana Malahayati's operations coordinator, retired Vice Admiral Agus Setiadji.

According to Ms. Setiadji, the shipbuilding process received support from the Mega Gotong Royong Fund of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) led by former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri./.
