Preparing human resources

This year, the rainy season came early and evenly in most localities in the province. This is a favorable condition for localities to carry out afforestation work. These days, tree nurseries in the province are quite busy, everyone is trying to choose quality tree varieties to plant forests in time.

Since the end of April, Mr. Cao Van Hieu’s forestry nursery (village 8, Nghia Hung commune, Chu Pah district) has been bustling with buyers. Among them, tree varieties such as three-leaf pine and acacia are the most sought after.

Mr. Hieu shared: “This year, I have planted about 6,000 three-leaf pine trees and 30,000 acacia trees. In addition to planting according to orders from some forest planting units, we also sell retail to people. Up to this point, the seedlings have grown relatively well and are qualified for sale. The selling price has not fluctuated much compared to last year, acacia trees cost 1,000-1,200 VND/tree, three-leaf pine trees cost from 5,000 to 13,000 VND/tree depending on size”.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tat Thanh - Director of the Bac Bien Ho Protective Forest Management Board: Right from the beginning of the year, the unit has proactively prepared all necessary conditions as well as coordinated with the winning units to clear the ground cover, prepare machinery, equipment, materials, seedling sources... to implement replacement forest planting. At the same time, organize propaganda and mobilize households with fields bordering the forest planting area to coordinate to create a forest protection belt.

“In 2025, the unit was assigned to plant more than 111 hectares of replacement forest (protection forest). Up to now, we have planted more than 10 hectares in Chu Pah district. For the remaining area, the unit is urgently implementing with the determination to strive to complete the assigned plan as well as proactively taking care to ensure the survival rate of the trees,” said Mr. Thanh.

Dak Doa district also has many policies to support people, especially those who have made mistakes, to reintegrate into the community in 12 communes and poor households in Ha Dong commune to plant scattered trees.

Mr. Le Tan Hung - Director of the District Agricultural Service Center - said: "From the career capital of 700 million VND, the unit bought 3,715 macadamia trees to support households in planting scattered trees, developing the economy , and gradually stabilizing their lives. Up to now, people have finished planting and are currently focusing on taking care of them. In addition, the district also supported 250 three-leaf pine trees and 300 green star trees for Dak Doa town to plant along the roads in the area."

Gia Lai has a large area of forestry land, a lot of rainfall, a river system suitable for many types of forestry trees for forest planting such as: three-leaf pine, acacia, eucalyptus, macadamia... Along with that, currently, the structure of tree varieties serving production forest planting in the province is increasingly diverse and rich in species, creating favorable conditions for propaganda and mobilizing people to switch to forest planting.

Mr. Truong Thanh Ha - Acting Head of the Provincial Forestry and Forest Protection Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment) informed: There are currently 38 establishments producing and trading forestry seedlings in the province. To meet the demand for plant seedlings, from the beginning of the year, the Department of Agriculture and Environment requested localities and forest owners to contact establishments and nurseries of forestry seedlings to ensure quality for concentrated afforestation, production forests and scattered tree planting. In particular, the source of seedlings is strictly controlled, has a clear origin, and meets the demand and quantity of seedlings in this year's afforestation season.

Expectations for new forest planting season

In the context of increasingly unpredictable climate change, Gia Lai province is determined to achieve the goal of increasing forest cover to 47.75% by 2025 and 49.2% by 2030. This goal is specified in the Resolution of the 16th Provincial Party Congress, term 2020-2025. In which, "sustainable forestry development, enhancing livelihoods, increasing forest cover, and adapting to climate change" is identified as one of the four key tasks of the term.

In 2022, the Provincial Party Committee issued Resolution No. 06-NQ/TU on sustainable forestry development, enhancing livelihoods, and increasing forest cover to adapt to climate change in the 2021-2030 period. Based on Resolution No. 06, the Provincial People's Committee issued Action Program No. 899/CTr-UBND dated May 9, 2022 on sustainable forestry development, enhancing livelihoods, and increasing forest cover to adapt to climate change in the 2021-2030 period.

Information from the Provincial Forestry and Forest Protection Department said: After 3 years of implementing Resolution No. 06, afforestation work has been carried out by departments, branches, localities, forest owners, and people in accordance with the soil conditions of each region. In the years 2022-2024, the whole province has planted more than 33,105 hectares of forest, reaching 82.76% of the Resolution's target (40,000 hectares of new planting). Of which, more than 24,811 hectares of concentrated afforestation and more than 8,293 hectares of scattered trees.

According to the 2025 plan, the whole province will plant 8,247 hectares of forest and scattered trees. Of which, localities, forest owners and people will plant 3,729 hectares of concentrated forest and scattered trees; enterprises will plant about 4,518 hectares of production forest. To date, localities and forest owners have planted more than 380 hectares of concentrated forest, 13,250 scattered trees and are implementing the planting according to the set seasonal plan.

In an interview with reporters, the acting head of the provincial Forestry and Forest Protection Department affirmed: In recent years, afforestation work in the province has been regularly carried out by sectors, localities, forest owners and people. The quality of plant varieties is strictly controlled.

“Despite many difficulties, localities have mobilized resources to plant forests and scattered trees according to the assigned plan. In addition, localities and forest owners have also propagated and encouraged people to convert crops suitable for forestry land.

At the same time, many training courses were organized, instructing people on forest planting techniques as well as calling for investment and linking with processing factories to build wood material areas. From there, gradually stabilizing output, increasing income, helping people feel secure in converting forestry land to forest planting" - Mr. Ha said.

According to Mr. Ha, in order for the 2025 forest and tree planting work to achieve the set plan, the unit continues to urge localities, forest owners and enterprises renting land to plant forests to promptly plant seedlings when the weather is favorable. At the same time, strictly manage the quality of forest seedlings, coordinate with relevant agencies and units to call on enterprises to invest in planting production forests in the province.
