Zimbabwe is looking to attract more Chinese tourists , especially during the Spring Festival, a Zimbabwean minister said on September 25.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of World Tourism Day (September 27), Zimbabwean Minister of Hotels and Tourism Barbara Rwodzi said: “China is becoming an important source market for Zimbabwe and we expect tourist arrivals to surge as we enter the festive season.”

This year, Zimbabwe is expecting more Chinese customers at the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Travel Fair - an annual event aimed at promoting the southern African country's tourism potential.

The Expo, to be held in the second largest city of Bulawayo from October 12-14, will attract local and international exhibitors, industry professionals and visitors interested in exploring Zimbabwe’s unique attractions and investment opportunities.

The tourism industry is of strategic importance to the Zimbabwean economy through foreign exchange flows and employment creation.

This nation of 16.5 million boasts a number of globally competitive tourist attractions, including Victoria Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world. Zimbabwe also has a rich wildlife resource, including the world's second-largest elephant herd.

Total tourist arrivals increased by 50% to about 530,000 in the first half of 2023 and tourism revenue increased by 16% to $343.1 million compared to the same period last year, according to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
