Northern provinces and cities are experiencing severe cold. It is forecasted that in the coming time, many strong cold air waves will continue to strengthen. Which areas in Vietnam are at risk of snow and ice?
Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoa, Deputy Head of Climate Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, has just said that in the next 1-month period (from January 11 to February 10, 2025), cold air tends to be more active.
In particular, strong cold air masses will concentrate in the first half of the forecast period and there is a possibility of many days of severe cold; there may be a risk of frost and ice.
Regarding the development of consecutive cold air waves from January 9 to this morning (January 11), the meteorological agency informed that most of the provinces and cities in the North, North Central and some places in the Central Central have been affected. In the Gulf of Tonkin, there are strong northeast winds of level 7, gusting to level 9; at Ly Son station, there are strong northeast winds of level 6.
This afternoon and tonight, the cold air continues to strengthen and affect some places in the South Central region. Northeast wind inland is strong at level 3, coastal areas at level 3-4, some places have gusts of level 6.
Due to the continuous influence of cold air, from January 11 to 13, in the North and the Thanh Hoa - Nghe An region, the weather will continue to be very cold. In the mountainous and midland areas of the North, the weather will be very cold, with the possibility of frost and frost; from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, the weather will be cold.
The meteorological agency said that the lowest temperature during this cold air mass in the North and Thanh Hoa - Nghe An region will generally be from 9-12 degrees Celsius, in the mountainous areas of the North 6-9 degrees Celsius, in the high mountainous areas below 3 degrees Celsius; in the Ha Tinh - Quang Binh region 13-16 degrees Celsius; in Quang Tri - Quang Ngai 15-18 degrees Celsius.
Particularly in Hanoi , from January 11-13, the weather will be very cold. The lowest temperature in this cold air is 9-12 degrees.
Meteorological experts say this cold spell is likely to be the coldest since the beginning of winter, when temperatures across the region will drop below 10 degrees, around early Sunday morning, January 12.
Not Fansipan, where is the coldest place in Vietnam?
Some recent cold spells have recorded frost on Fansipan peak, such as on January 5 and before that on November 23 and December 23, 2024. Located in the center of the 280km long Hoang Lien Son range, Fansipan peak with an altitude of 3,143m is the highest point in Vietnam. Many people often think that this will be the coldest place in our country, but in fact it is not so.
According to statistics from Lang Son Hydrometeorological Station, winter at Mau Son peak with many times recorded temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong winds and ice, is the harshest and coldest place in Vietnam.
When strong cold air flows in, causing widespread cold, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting often issues an additional 6am bulletin to inform about the temperature in some areas. In particular, Mau Son peak (Lang Son province) is often recorded as the place with the lowest temperature in the country.
Mau Son is the highest mountain range in Lang Son province, with an average altitude of 800-1,000m above sea level. The highest point of Mau Son mountain is 30km east of Lang Son city center and about 180km from Hanoi capital.
Due to the terrain structure with many arc-shaped mountain ranges opening up in the north, converging towards Tam Dao, Mau Son is the gateway to the monsoon in Vietnam. In winter, Mau Son's temperature drops to below zero, often with frost and occasional snowfall. The average temperature here is 15.5 degrees, this mountain peak is covered with clouds all year round.
During the time when the top of Mau Son is covered in ice, many people flock here to see the ice and “hunt for snow”. Authorities recommend that people wear shoes with strong soles when traveling to the top of Mau Son. Drivers should pay attention to icy, slippery roads. In particular, due to low temperatures and high humidity, it is easy to get heat shock, so visitors coming here should pay attention to keeping their bodies warm.
Cold air continues to flow in, the North has the coldest time since the beginning of the season
