The 0-3 defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League final in midweek did not put Leverkusen in a bad mood when competing for the German Cup with Kaiserslautern. Coach Xabi Alonso's players dominated the game and opened the score after 16 minutes of play.
Patrik Schick and Florian Wirtz combined to make the Kaiserslautern defense work hard to contain. The ball bounced right into the path of Granit Xhaka and the midfielder unleashed a powerful shot from 25 meters, forcing goalkeeper Julian Krahl to stand still for the masterpiece.
It seemed that Leverkusen would create a resounding victory, but they fell into a situation of being short-handed in the 44th minute. Defender Odilon Kossounou received a second yellow card after kicking an opponent's leg and was sent off.
