A farmer in Hau Giang province risked digging ditches to plant water lilies in Da Lat during the flood season and hit it big.

Water lilies often grow in ponds or low-lying areas during the flood season and are used by people as food to enrich their family meals.

To take advantage of the water surface area of ​​garden ditches to grow fruit trees, many households in Bung Tau town, Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province have chosen Dalat water lily (red water lily) to intercrop to increase family income.

When asked about the reason he planted Da Lat water lilies, he shared: "To plant water lilies, you only need to take advantage of the surface area of ​​the ditch to plant. Low investment cost, little care required...".

According to Mr. Cuong, after 2 to 2.5 months of planting, Da Lat lotus can be harvested. Planting lotus is also quite simple.

Lotus is planted in bushes, each bush is about 2m apart.

If planting by tubers, you can incubate them in young mud to let the tubers germinate before transplanting to increase the survival rate.

At first the number of flowers is small, but after a while the lotus flowers will spread throughout the ditch.

If the water level in the ditch is deeper and the bottom of the ditch is muddy, Dalat water lily will grow strongly.

After each harvest, in the dry season the lotus will wither, but if well cared for, water kept in the pond and ditch and fertilizer added, the lotus will grow well.

With an area of ​​1.5 hectares of bananas, Mr. Cuong took advantage of the ditch area to intercrop water lilies.

Currently, the lotus flowers in Mr. Cuong's garden ditch are yielding about 600 kg - 700 kg of lotus flowers each time, each harvest is about 5 days apart.

Mr. Cuong is selling water lilies at prices ranging from 3,500 VND/kg - 4,000 VND/kg, on average Mr. Chinh earns about 14 million VND per month.

After harvesting, the lotus flowers are cut and tied into bundles, and traders come to the house to buy them.

Intercropping model is not a new model in Bung Tau town, Phung Hiep district (Hau Giang province), but to choose suitable crops for intercropping in fruit gardens.

Typically, Mr. Cuong's intercropping model, combining water lilies with fruit trees, not only contributes to increasing family income, but it is also one of the development directions for farmers to have more income on the same area of ​​cultivation.

This is also an effective model that can be replicated throughout the town.
