CNN reported on June 4 that a man with dual Haitian and Chilean citizenship was sentenced to life in prison in Florida (USA) after pleading guilty to the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

Judge Jose E. Martinez sentenced Rodolphe Jaar, 51, to life in prison at a Miami court on June 3, after a 10-minute interrogation. The defendant will serve three life sentences concurrently.

In March, the defendant pleaded guilty to three charges, including conspiracy to commit assassination or kidnapping outside the United States and providing material support resulting in death. The late President Moise was murdered in his bedroom on July 7, 2021, at the age of 53.

Judge Martinez also recommended that the defendant be held at a federal facility in South Florida or a nearby area.

In the plea agreement, the defendant agreed to be sentenced, to give truthful testimony, and to provide relevant documents. The defendant's attorney, Frank Schwartz, did not comment after the verdict.

Jaar was one of several suspects who fled for months after the assassination of Mr. Moise, before being arrested in the Dominican Republic and extradited to the United States in January 2022.

Authorities said dozens of people were involved in the assassination, including 26 Colombians and two Haitian-Americans. Colombian suspect Mario Palaciso will be extradited to the US in 2022.

Defendant Jaar confessed to financing the purchase of weapons, providing food and accommodation for other accomplices, as well as funding bribes to security officials of the late Haitian President.
