US and British warplanes and warships struck a series of underground facilities, missile launchers, command and control sites, Houthi ships and other facilities, according to officials.

Eight drones in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen were also attacked by the US because they were identified as a threat to US and coalition forces.

The airstrikes killed at least 16 people and wounded 35, according to Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam.

The attack came a day after a US MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down in Yemen, with Houthi forces releasing video showing it being targeted by a surface-to-air missile in a desert area of Yemen’s central Marib province. It was the third such crash in May alone.

Also earlier this week, missile strikes twice damaged a Greek-owned, Marshall Islands-flagged ship in the Red Sea off Yemen. Houthi forces claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is the fifth time the US and UK militaries have jointly carried out a campaign against the Houthis since January 12. The US has also carried out near-daily strikes against Houthi targets, including missiles and drones targeting ships, as well as weapons ready to launch.

Officials said US F/A-18 fighter jets took off from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. Other US warships in the area also participated.

According to the US Maritime Administration, Houthi forces have carried out more than 50 attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, seizing one ship and sinking another since November.
