The population increased by nearly 1 million people

The General Statistics Office has just released a report on the socio -economic situation in 2023. According to statistics, the average population of Vietnam in 2023 is 100.3 million people, an increase of 834,800 people compared to 2022. Currently, Vietnam is the third most populous country in Southeast Asia (after Indonesia and the Philippines) and ranks 15th in the world. Of which, men are 50 million people, accounting for 49.9%; women are 50.3 million people, accounting for 50.1%. The sex ratio of the population is 99.5 men/100 women. According to the General Statistics Office, the birth rate is showing a slight downward trend, the population growth rate has gradually decreased in recent years. It is forecasted that the birth rate will continue to decrease in the following years (the average population growth rate in 2022 is 0.98%, in 2023 is 0.84%). Vietnam's population structure is shifting towards an increasing proportion of the elderly and a decreasing proportion of the young population. Vietnam is currently in the golden population structure period and is also in the process of population aging. Specifically, the proportion of the young population aged 0-14 years decreased from 24.3% in 2019 to about 23.9% in 2023; while the population aged 60 years and over increased rapidly, from 11.9% in 2019 to 13.9% in 2023. The population aged 15-59 years accounted for 63.8% in 2019 and decreased to 62.2% in 2023. In addition, the total fertility rate in 2023 is estimated at 1.96 children/woman. Vietnam's fertility rate is lower than the average of Southeast Asian countries (2.0 children/woman). In particular, the gender imbalance remains high. The sex ratio at birth in 2023 is 112 boys/100 girls.

Vietnamese people have an average life expectancy of 73.7 years.

According to the General Statistics Office, population quality has improved, birth rates have decreased sharply and have basically maintained replacement fertility since 2005. Mortality rates remain low, and life expectancy has increased due to advances in medicine and improved health care. The average life expectancy of the country's population in 2023 is 73.7 years (73.6 years in 2022), of which men are 71.1 years old and women are 76.5 years old. Vietnamese people have a relatively high life expectancy compared to countries with the same standard of living, but they have many years of life with illness. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), among 10 Southeast Asian countries, Vietnamese men's life expectancy ranks 5th and Vietnamese women's life expectancy ranks 2nd. However, the number of years of life with illness is high compared to other countries. Sharing with the press earlier, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Trung Anh, Director of the Central Geriatric Hospital, said that the elderly in Vietnam suffer from many diseases. Each elderly person on average endures the last 14 years of their life with many combined diseases. "Specifically, on average, a person over 60 years old suffers from 3-4 diseases, especially those over 80 years old can suffer from more than 6 diseases. This is a huge burden for patients as well as their families, especially in terms of care. In addition to health support policies for the elderly, people need to strengthen disease prevention measures. In particular, it is necessary to screen for health, detect diseases early and manage non-communicable diseases well...", Mr. Trung Anh shared.
