Southern region enters rainy season, Ho Chi Minh City has continuous thunderstorms

TPO - The Southern region is entering the rainy season, saltwater intrusion in the river systems of the Eastern and Western regions of the South is showing a tendency to gradually decrease.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the Southwest region will have rain, moderate rain and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, May 21, with some areas having heavy to very heavy rain. The lowest temperature is from 25-28 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature is from 30-33 degrees Celsius, with some places above 34 degrees Celsius.

From around May 28 onwards, the rain is likely to gradually increase. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. During the day, there will be intermittent sunshine with the highest temperature in the Southwest region generally ranging from 31-34 degrees Celsius, higher in some places.

In addition, the water level on the Tien and Hau rivers changes slowly according to the tide. The highest water level of the week in Tan Chau ( An Giang ) is 1.45m, in Chau Doc (An Giang) is 1.65m, at a level higher than the average of many years (TBNN) for the same period by about 0.25-0.30m.

Tidal water level at Vung Tau station from May 21 to May 30 fluctuated at an average level, peak tide during this period fluctuated between 3.60 and 3.80m, peak tide time mainly occurred between 3 and 5am and 11am and 2pm every day.

The depth of the 4‰ salinity boundary at the main river mouths is as follows: Dong Vam Co and Tay Vam Co rivers: salinity intrusion range 90-120km; Tieu and Dai Cua rivers: salinity intrusion range 40-44km; Ham Luong river: salinity intrusion range 45-48km; Co Chien river: salinity intrusion range 30-33km; Hau river: salinity intrusion range 30-32km; Cai Lon river: salinity intrusion range 35-42km.

It is forecasted that from now until the end of May 2024, saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta will tend to gradually decrease.

In addition, forecasting the salinity intrusion situation in the Ho Chi Minh City area (from May 21 to May 30), the Southern Hydrometeorological Station said that next week, the salinity at most stations on the Saigon - Dong Nai River is likely to decrease rapidly by the end of the week. The salinity of 4‰ can penetrate as far as 45-50km from the river mouth.
