The attendance of President Luong Cuong and his wife, along with the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation, at the High-Level General Debate of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly reflects Vietnam's active, proactive participation and responsible contribution to the United Nations; contributes to affirming and enhancing Vietnam's international position, and demonstrates the message of Vietnam's stance on respecting international law, the United Nations Charter, and resolving conflicts and disputes by peaceful means.
Meanwhile, the President's activities in the United States aim to deepen relations with the United States, concretize commitments between the two countries' senior leaders, and promote cooperation, especially in the fields of economics , trade, investment, science and technology.
The United Nations was officially established on October 24, 1945, when the United Nations Charter was ratified. Through promoting dialogue, presiding over negotiations, with the powers provided by the United Nations Charter and its unique international status, the United Nations has become a mechanism for member states to promote common ground and jointly address challenges, making common decisions on global issues such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, humanitarian and health crises, gender equality, etc.
After 80 years of development, the United Nations has become the most extensive global organization with the participation of most independent countries in the world. The role and activities of the United Nations have been expanded in all aspects, striving to work towards the implementation of the set objectives and goals, thereby bringing positive and great impacts to international life and each nation. From 51 member countries when it was established, the United Nations now has 193 member countries.
With its important achievements, the United Nations has been recognized by the international community as a global organization with an extremely important role in international political life and an indispensable foundation for a more peaceful, prosperous and just world.

On September 20, 1977, Vietnam officially joined the United Nations. Over the past 50 years, the relationship between Vietnam and the United Nations has developed positively, deepened, and been constantly consolidated and strengthened. During the stages of national reconstruction, post-war recovery, embargo removal, and gradual international integration, Vietnam has always had the accompaniment and assistance of the United Nations.
The Vietnam-United Nations relationship has contributed to protecting and promoting the national interests of Vietnam, especially maintaining and consolidating a peaceful, secure and favorable environment for national development; promoting deeper international integration and contributing to enhancing Vietnam's position and image in the international arena; deepening Vietnam's relations with other countries, key partners and friends and mobilizing an important resource to serve the country's development.
On the other hand, Vietnam has proactively and increasingly substantially contributed to the activities of the United Nations, including promoting the role of the United Nations and multilateralism, promoting respect for the United Nations Charter, international law, equal relations, development cooperation between nations and the right to self-determination of peoples, opposing acts of oppression, invasion, and unilateral embargoes in international relations; participating in and contributing to the discussion and adoption of many important resolutions and declarations of the United Nations on development cooperation, disarmament, preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, combating terrorism, and ensuring human rights.

Vietnam is considered by the United Nations and the international community as a successful example in implementing the Millennium Development Goals and a country determined and serious in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Vietnam also actively promotes initiatives to reform the United Nations, and is considered one of the leading countries in implementing the United Nations' "Delivering as One" initiative to increase the effectiveness of the United Nations' operations at the national level.
With its contributions, Vietnam has been elected to many important positions and agencies of the United Nations and has left many "imprints" of Vietnam in agencies such as the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly takes place in the context of the world continuing its rapid transition to a multipolar, multi-centered, multi-level situation; at the same time, international and regional developments continue to show a trend of volatility, complexity, and instability due to increasing strategic competition, armed conflicts, and non-traditional security challenges. In addition, global challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, epidemics, migration, food security, energy security, cyber security, transnational crime, etc. are increasingly serious and unpredictable; global development agendas, especially the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), face many difficulties due to a lack of resources.
