Russia says 'incident obscure', demands urgent international investigation

German media reported on June 8 that Russia requested an investigation to clarify the explosions of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

"There must be an urgent and transparent international investigation into what is happening now," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The statement came after the Washington Post reported that three months before the September 2022 explosions, the US government was informed by a European intelligence agency of the Ukrainian military's plan to carry out explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines.

"We don't know how close such published information is to reality. However, it is a shady case that needs to be clarified," Mr. Peskov said.

According to the Washington Post , the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was informed by European secret services that a six-member group from an elite Ukrainian unit planned to blow up natural gas pipelines in a secret diving operation.

The group would drive a rented boat under false identities to the pipeline area and then dive down to the pipelines to plant explosives. The plan is said to be very detailed and very similar to the real attack that took place in September 2022.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied Kiev's involvement in the alleged sabotage attacks on the Nord Stream pipeline.
