Russia attacks Ukraine's strategic stronghold in Kursk

(Dan Tri) - Russia has launched a direct attack on the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region. This could become a decisive stage in Moscow's campaign to regain control of the area.

Avia Pro website quoted information from war reporters on March 8 saying that fierce fighting is taking place in the border town of Sudzha in Russia's Kursk region.

Russian armed forces launched an attack on Ukrainian army positions, seeking to drive the enemy out of this strategic settlement.

The attack on Sudzha began on the night of March 7 and the morning of March 8. Russian forces advanced from multiple directions, attempting to cut off Ukraine's main supply routes in the area.

In particular, the Sudzha - Korenevo route has come under Russian fire control. This further complicates Ukraine's logistics.

Sudzha, located less than 10km from the Russian-Ukrainian border, has been under Ukrainian control since August last year after a surprise offensive. This is a strategic stronghold for Ukraine to maintain control over Russian territory and improve its position ahead of any potential negotiations with Moscow.

If Russia’s new offensive is successful, it could encircle the thousands of Ukrainian troops holding out in Sudzha. While some sources say Ukraine has more than 2,000 troops in Sudzha, others say the number could be as high as 10,000.

Experts note that the encirclement of such a large group could lead to significant losses for the Ukrainian side, including elite paratrooper units and special operations forces.

Data from Deep State , a reputable Ukrainian military channel, on March 7 also said that three-quarters of Ukrainian forces in Kursk were almost completely surrounded.

According to the source, there is now only a narrow strip of land about 1km long and 0.5km wide that helps this force connect with the remaining group of Ukrainian soldiers near the Russian border. However, the Russian army is also stepping up its attacks to cut off the route.

"Russia has an advantage in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including both reconnaissance and attack UAVs. The most common type they are using is the first-person-view UAV that plays a key role in controlling fire on anything moving in or out of the Kursk region," Deep State commented.

Russian military blogger Yuri Podolyaka said the Russian army had achieved a major breakthrough south of the town of Sudzha.

"Russia has created a breakthrough up to 4km deep and has practically taken control of the alternative supply route to Sudzha that Ukraine is using because the main logistical artery is currently impassable," Mr. Podolyaka said.

Military expert Pasi Paroinen of the Black Bird Group organization commented: "The situation in Ukraine in Kursk is very bad. There is not much time left before Ukrainian soldiers are completely surrounded or forced to retreat. Retreating is also very dangerous because they are constantly attacked by Russian UAVs and artillery."
