(GLO)- Heavy rains washed away a temporary road across the stream used by people during the construction of the Ia Pet culvert (Bo Ngoong commune, Chu Se district, Gia Lai province); traffic was cut off, and the buying and selling of goods was also interrupted.
At the scene, a temporary dirt road across the stream, about 5 meters long, was completely washed away, leaving only the drainage pipes underneath. Although more than 3 days had passed, the muddy water was still flowing rapidly, and the banks on both sides still showed signs of erosion, so the construction unit had strung up ropes and installed warning lights at night to prevent people from recklessly crossing the stream.

Mr. Phan Dinh Hung (village 16, Bo Ngoong commune), who lives next to this temporary road, said: For nearly 2 months now, to construct the Ia Pet culvert project to replace the seriously degraded iron bridge that was dismantled, the construction unit has built a temporary road across the stream for people to travel. However, on the afternoon of June 6, a large amount of water from upstream poured in, rising suddenly and washed away a section of the temporary road.
Mr. Hung said that the amount of water flowing down was very large while the drainage system through this stream was quite small, the water could not drain fast enough, which was the reason why the road broke. On the other hand, the temporary road was only made of soil, not firmly reinforced, so it was easily swept away by floodwaters.

“The incident happened more than 3 days ago but the construction unit has not yet fixed it. We request the construction unit to build a more solid temporary road, ensuring smooth and safe traffic during the rainy season,” Mr. Hung suggested.
The main road is cut off by the stream, so when people reach this location and want to move to the commune center, they have to turn back, follow the village road around Bar Maih commune, which takes more than 4 km. Photo: Minh Phuong |
Because the main road is cut off by the Ia Pet stream, when people reach this location and want to move to the commune center, they have to turn back and go around the village road through Bar Maih commune, which takes more than 4 km, while the old road is only a few dozen meters from the stream. The temporary road being washed away by water has more or less disrupted the lives of people on both sides of this road.
Mr. Ro Mah Bon-Amo village (Bo Ngoong commune) said: The bypass road is seriously degraded, with many deep holes, potholes, and potholes appearing, while the number of trucks transporting goods to avoid the cut-off point has increased dramatically, posing a potential risk of traffic accidents. Some people living nearby are afraid to take the detour, so they risk their lives and try to cross the stream.
Mr. Le Duy Khuong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Bo Ngoong Commune - informed: Immediately after the incident of water washing away the temporary road, the commune directed relevant forces to put up warning ropes to prevent people from passing, and at the same time guided people to take the detour while waiting for the construction unit to fix it.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Bo Ngoong commune emphasized: "To limit the situation of people ignoring the danger and trying to wade across the stream at this broken dam section to get to the other side, the commune has also notified the villages to warn people not to intentionally cross, to avoid unfortunate accidents."
Representative of the investor, Mr. Ho Van Chien - Deputy Director of the Project Management Board of Chu Seneu district, said: "The construction unit has gathered large-sized drainage pipes, waiting for the water to recede to re-install the pipes and fill the road surface for people to travel as well as to speed up the construction progress of the Ia Pet culvert project".
