On November 25, the Center for Supporting Technology Development for the Blind (under the Ho Chi Minh City Talking Book Charity Fund for the Blind) in collaboration with the Khanh Hoa Province Blind Association opened a course on how to use touch-screen phones for the blind.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the class, Mr. Le Van Thang - Chairman of the Association of the Blind of Khanh Hoa province - said that the opening of the course on using touch phones for the blind has helped the blind in Khanh Hoa province reduce their self-consciousness and inferiority complex towards society, thereby helping them to integrate into the community.

Mr. Thang shared that the blind knowing how to use touch phones not only helps reduce the burden on their families and society, but also helps them enter the 4.0 technology era.

“Through the first class, many blind people have improved their income by livestreaming to sell products via social networks, or being able to book a car or transfer money on their phones,” said Mr. Thang.

Mr. Phan Tan Minh - Standing Member of Khanh Hoa Province Blind Association - said that the course will instruct blind people on how to use screen reading software, voice recognition tools, information lookup, and how to use applications such as Zalo, Gmail, etc.

“Instead of swiping the phone screen from left to right, the blind person will move their finger on the left to move the screen, from which the phone will read out the sounds of the standby screen, message screen, and phone call screen,” said Mr. Minh.

Send love to the blind

On this occasion, the Hang family (Han family) in Nha Trang city and friends of the Talking Book Charity Fund for the Blind also presented 16 touch-screen phones, 30 walking sticks, and many gifts to blind students with a total value of more than 150 million VND. In addition to the gifts, there was also 200,000 VND for blind students to buy 4G network cards after they finished this smartphone usage class.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Hang Chuc Nguyen - representative of the Hang family (Han family) - expressed his thanks to the Khanh Hoa Province Association for the Blind for creating conditions for the Ho Chi Minh City Talking Book Charity Fund for the Blind and the Hang family (Han family) to have the opportunity to share with the blind in the province.

“We cannot imagine that thanks to a smartphone, blind people can put products online to sell for a living or advertise their work,” Mr. Nguyen shared.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam - Director of the Talking Book Charity Fund for the Blind - said that technology has helped blind people have the best way to access and integrate into society.

“When switching from a printed book, four to five Braille books can be printed, but the value of a Braille book is very expensive, so it is very difficult to have a common book for the blind to go to school. Smartphones are the most convenient tool to help blind people access society and improve their lives,” said Mr. Tam.
