Having an accident while driving, Ms. PBN (42 years old, residing in Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) was stabbed in the left leg by a motorbike kickstand and was promptly taken to the hospital for emergency treatment by local people.
Ms. N. was admitted to the hospital with a bleeding calf, a scratched skin area, and a motorcycle kickstand piercing her left calf. A CT scan showed that she had an open fracture of both bones in her left tibia.
After receiving the patient, the Emergency Department doctors coordinated with the Orthopedic Trauma Department doctors of Xuyen A General Hospital to immediately stop the bleeding, bandage the wound and perform surgery to remove the foreign object from the patient's leg.
The patient was taken to the emergency room with a motorcycle kickstand stuck in his calf.
On November 19, specialist doctor Nguyen Duy Toan, Xuyen A General Hospital, said the patient was anesthetized, the wound was disinfected and the foreign object was removed. During the procedure, the team tried not to damage the surrounding soft tissues.
After removing the kickstand from the lower leg, the team washed the crushed tissue, cut and sutured the torn tendon. After 7 days, the patient underwent a second surgery to fuse the bone with an intramedullary nail.
After surgery, Ms. N. was monitored and cared for in the Orthopedic Trauma Department. Currently, her health condition is stable, blood circulation is good, no pus, no swelling. She was instructed to practice walking and rehabilitation.
Doctor Nguyen Duy Toan said that in cases like Ms. N.'s, if not treated promptly, it could lead to infection, embolism, and in severe cases, loss of the leg. In similar cases of accidents involving foreign objects penetrating the body, people should not arbitrarily remove the foreign object, but should bandage the wound and quickly take the victim to a medical facility.
