Previously, at around 6:00 p.m. on September 17, the City Children's Hospital received baby KSR (13 months old, Cambodian), who was transferred from a previous hospital with a diagnosis of severe pneumonia.

Relatives said that about 20 days ago, the baby showed signs of coughing, wheezing, no fever and the family bought medicine for him to take. Despite taking the medicine continuously, the signs of illness did not improve.

Two days before being admitted to the hospital, the baby showed signs of labored breathing and purple lips, and was taken to a hospital in Cambodia. Due to increasingly serious breathing difficulties, the family decided to request a transfer to Vietnam for treatment.

After arriving in Vietnam, the family took the baby to a hospital in An Giang province. There, the baby suffered from severe respiratory failure, cyanosis, and was intubated for 2 days, given antibiotics, vasopressors, etc., but the condition did not improve and was transferred to the City Children's Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City).

At the time of admission, doctors noted that the baby was still purple despite being on a ventilator, had low blood oxygen levels, a soft abdomen, and subcutaneous emphysema in the chest and neck. X-rays showed that the patient's lungs were inflamed and collapsed on the left side. A CT scan clearly showed that the patient had a collapsed left lung and a complete blockage of the left main bronchus. At this time, doctors thought of the possibility that the child had a foreign body or mucus plug, right lung emphysema, or mediastinal emphysema.

After a hospital-wide consultation, the doctors performed a respiratory endoscopy and noted that the right main bronchus had a hard, dark brown foreign object that moved up and down with breathing, blocking the bronchial lumen. The doctors removed the foreign object, a custard apple seed, from the glottis. At this time, the main bronchus on both sides and the branch bronchi were clear again.

The child is currently being cared for and treated for pneumonia in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
