The woman who broke the "glass ceiling" on Wall Street

Mary Gindhart Herbert Roebling (July 29, 1905 – October 25, 1994) was an American banker, businesswoman, and philanthropist.

She was the first woman to serve as president of a major US bank and helped guide the country's economy through difficult times.

Mary Gindhart was born in New Jersey (USA) and was the eldest of four children. She married for the first time at the age of 19 to a member of an influential family but her husband died shortly after.

She remarried Siegfried Roebling, the son of a wealthy family, and received a share of the stock of the Trenton Trust Financial Center after her husband's death in 1936.

Mary Gindhart was the first woman to serve as president of a major US bank.

Thanks to her time studying finance and banking at the University of Pennsylvania and New York University, she quickly proved her ability after taking over her husband's position on the Board of Directors of Trenton Trust.

In 1937, she was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors, becoming the first woman to serve as president of a major American commercial bank. She served as president for more than 30 years until the bank merged, then continued as chairman until 1984.

Mary Gindhart was more than just a manager. She modernized the bank, expanded its services, and oversaw a merger that led to the formation of Trenton National Bank.

In 1978, she founded Women's Bank National (Women's Bank NA) in Denver, the first U.S. chartered bank founded by women, and served as Chairwoman of the Board of Directors until 1983.
