From the first supermoon of 2024 in August, Vietnamese astronomy lovers will have the opportunity to admire 4 consecutive supermoons.
A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches perigee (the closest point to the Earth in its elliptical orbit around the Earth) at or near the time of a full moon or new moon.
A supermoon occurs on a full moon night, the moon's bright disk is about 14% larger in diameter than when the moon is at aphelion (the farthest point in its orbit) (about 30% larger in area) and about 30% brighter.

What are the supermoons?

Because this is the third of four full moons in this season, it is called a Blue Moon. This rare calendar event only occurs every few years, giving rise to the term “single Blue Moon.” Normally, there are only three full moons in each season of the year. However, because the full moon cycle occurs every 29.53 days, sometimes a season will have four full moons. The additional full moon in the season is called a Blue Moon.
