The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said a Delta Air Lines flight arriving in San Antonio, Texas from Los Angeles on the evening of June 23 (local time) was taxiing to the gate with one engine running when a worker was sucked into that engine.

It is not yet clear how the person was sucked into the engine and the NTSB is urgently investigating the incident.

Local media said the victim was an employee of Unifi Aviation, the company Delta Air Lines contracts to perform ground operations.

Delta told San Antonio TV station KENS 5 that the company was deeply saddened by the incident and was actively cooperating with authorities as the investigation began. "We are deeply saddened by this incident and will cooperate with authorities in their investigation," Delta Air Lines said.

Meanwhile, Unifi Aviation called the incident "a tragic accident". At the same time, they affirmed: "From our initial investigation, this incident is not related to the company's operating procedures or safety policies".

This is not the first time a person has been caught in a plane engine in the US. Piedmont Airlines was fined $15,625 for the death of a ground staff member last year in a similar incident. Piedmont is a subsidiary of American Airlines.
