Japan issues statement expressing concern about the situation in the East Sea

According to the ministry, issues related to the East Sea are of legitimate concern to the international community and are directly related to peace and stability in the region.

Japan strongly opposes any attempt to use force to unilaterally change the status quo in the East Sea or any action that increases tensions.

Reiterating the content of the Joint Statement of the leaders of Japan, the US and the Philippines in April 2024, the statement emphasized that Tokyo expressed concern about illegal claims of maritime rights and interests in the East Sea, and firmly opposed the dangerous use of coast guard and militia vessels.

The communique also mentioned the contents of the Japan-Philippines Press Release issued in November 2023 and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Communiqué issued in July 2023 on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the international arbitration court's ruling on the Philippines' lawsuit against China.

Accordingly, Tokyo highly appreciates the Philippine government 's stance of steadfastly complying with the ruling and demonstrating its commitment to peacefully resolving disputes in the East Sea.

The government of Prime Minister Kishida Fumio affirmed that the international arbitration ruling is final and legally binding on the disputing parties, expressing strong hope that compliance with the ruling will lead to a peaceful resolution of disputes in the East Sea.

Japan has consistently supported the enforcement of maritime law and will continue to coordinate with the international community, including the United States and ASEAN, to maintain a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
