On October 21, Duc Giang General Hospital (Hanoi) was officially recognized by the Ministry of Health as "Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital", becoming the first public hospital in Hanoi to achieve this title.
Sharing at the announcement, Dr. Vu Thi Thu Nga, Head of the Neonatal Department, Duc Giang General Hospital, said that the obstetrics department currently receives more than 3,000 births each year. In order to provide maximum support to mothers, the hospital has invested in a separate milking room, fully equipped with cups, spoons, steaming and drying tools, and breast pumps.
"Thanks to strict skin-to-skin contact within 90 minutes after birth, 95-96% of newborns are breastfed early within the first hour. This not only helps mothers produce good milk, limits postpartum hemorrhage, but also helps children stabilize their body temperature, increase resistance and strengthen the mother-child bond," Dr. Nga shared.
According to doctors, the initial implementation of this model encountered many difficulties. Many mothers felt uncomfortable with prolonged skin-to-skin contact, or still maintained the habit of bringing formula milk to the hospital.
In particular, there are cases where only a few hours after birth, there are calls for formula milk consultation. This has affected the psychology of mothers in the practice of breastfeeding.
The hospital has had to contact the authorities to work to limit the situation of calling to offer formula milk. At the same time, it organizes weekly prenatal classes to help pregnant women better understand the benefits of breast milk and guide mothers to practice breastfeeding.
"Thanks to your patient guidance and support, most mothers now choose breast milk and the Kangaroo method as the best way to take care of their children in the first days of life," Dr. Nga shared.
After 3 years of implementation, Duc Giang General Hospital has fully met the 12 assessment checklists of the Ministry of Health and has been officially recognized with the title "Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital".
Mr. Do Dinh Tung, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, added that this was a very difficult title to achieve, and is a recognition of the persistent efforts, dedication and love of the medical team for mothers and children.
"We will continue to deploy and spread this model to other hospitals so that more children can benefit from breast milk," Mr. Tung affirmed.

At the program, Mr. Nguyen Van Chi, Deputy Director of the Department of Mothers and Children (Ministry of Health), emphasized that breastfeeding is the most important measure to help improve the life and health of young children.
The Ministry of Health is promoting the Hospital of Excellence in Breastfeeding model, to help health facilities implement guidelines on early essential newborn care and Kangaroo Mother Care, contributing to increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life.
Mr. Vu Cao Cuong, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health, affirmed that achieving this title is not only the hospital's personal joy but also the common pride of the capital's health sector in its efforts to care for the health of mothers and children.
He said the Hanoi Department of Health will continue to support and direct other medical facilities in the area to replicate this model, contributing to improving the quality of maternal health care.
