Message of peace - the "red thread" of films

“Little Hanoi” (directed by Hai Ninh, 1974) is a brilliant milestone of Vietnamese cinema. “Little Hanoi” is considered the most successful and touching film depicting the image of the capital Hanoi after the historic 12-day-night war. The film revolves around the story of little Ngoc Ha, after a fierce bombing in the winter of 1972, Ngoc Ha lost her family, she searched for her parents and younger sister in the devastated, desolate landscape of Hanoi. Her clear eyes became a symbol of faith in life and a peaceful tomorrow. The film won the Vietnam Film Festival Award in 1975, the Special Jury Prize of the Moscow International Film Festival 1975... The film was shown in many countries, becoming a masterpiece of Vietnamese cinema.

When the bombs cleared, Hanoi entered a period of revival and cinema continued to record that journey with touching footage. “Hanoi in the season of birds making nests” (1978, directed by Duc Hoan) tells the story of young people returning after the war to rebuild the capital, finding love and faith again. The film does not embellish or idealize any values but reflects reality as the heartbeat of life in peacetime before change. Hanoi in the film is not just a setting but a living character, both bearing the wounds of war and shining with faith in the future.

“Long Tri Festival Night” by director Hai Ninh (1989) was a success of Vietnamese cinema in the reform period with the historical-historical genre. “Long Tri Festival Night” with its elaborate setting is based on a story that has been described by writer Nguyen Huy Tuong in a captivating way about the intrigues of the royal court. Although set in ancient history, it still conveys a message of patriotism, the desire for justice, and the indomitable spirit in the face of evil and wrong. Through that, the audience clearly sees: Hanoi - the thousand-year-old capital not only has history, but also has a soul.

Most recently, the film “Peach, Pho and Piano” is a 2023 Vietnamese propaganda war film, a romantic epic written and directed by Phi Tien Son. Set in the battle of Hanoi that took place at the end of 1946, he emphasized the idea of the film based on the special nature of the battle, when people with primitive weapons confronted the French army for 60 days to protect the capital from the French re-invasion.

Turn memories into vivid experiences

Not only in feature films, documentaries about Hanoi also have profound historical and humanistic values. From the 1980s to the present, documentaries have rich content. Some examples include: “Hanoi in Whose Eyes”, “When the Mist Disperses”, “Hanoi Night”, “Hanoi Old Quarter”, “Hanoi Soul”, “Doctor Tran Duy Hung - A Hanoi Dignity”… Documentaries help viewers not only “see” history, but also “understand” history - understand why our ancestors fought and sacrificed to protect every inch of land, every roof, every sacred place in the heart of Hanoi.

On the occasion of Capital Liberation Day, October 10, many cinemas, schools and organizations organized free screenings of films such as “Hanoi Baby”, “Hanoi Winter 1946”, “October Memories”… for students. On the internet, hundreds of short films, 3D clips and animations about Capital Liberation Day created by young people have attracted millions of views.

In addition, each film about the liberation of the Capital is a piece of memory about the city of courage and culture. These works become a living cultural asset, connecting people and tourists with history in the "Following the footsteps of Hanoi films" tours, taking tourists to the Opera House, Long Bien Bridge, Hoan Kiem Lake..., the places imprinted in the film to turn memories into vivid experiences...

All of these things prove one thing: history is not far away, just need to be told in the right language, the flame of patriotism still burns in the hearts of today's generation.
