Records that no school has

The High School for Natural Sciences (including the former General Specialized Classes and Blocks) has won 249 medals out of a total of 770 medals nationwide in international competitions (accounting for 32% of the countries). Of these, there are 79 gold medals out of a total of 198 gold medals nationwide, accounting for 40%.

Nationwide, there are 10 students who participated in the International Math Olympiad and got the perfect score of 42/42, 6 of whom are students of the Natural Science Specialized School. Nationwide, there are 9 students who won 2 consecutive gold medals in the International Math Olympiad, 6 of whom are students of the school.

The whole country has 2 students who won 2 consecutive gold medals in the International Olympiad in Informatics, both are students of the school.

Only the General Specialized Block - High School for Natural Sciences became the only place where all members of the national team competing internationally were its students, and this record was repeated consecutively: 3 times for the IT team (2003, 2015, 2024) and 1 time for the Physics team (1999).

In addition to the above collective records, the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences also holds a number of other individual records. For example, up to now, the whole country has only had two 10th grade students winning international gold medals, both of whom are students of the school: Ngo Quy Dang (math) and Vo Hoang Hai (physics). Hai is also one of six Vietnamese students who have won two consecutive international physics gold medals.

Or, the youngest Vietnamese contestant to win an international gold medal in math was a student of the General Math Class (A0): Nguyen Tien Dung (IMO gold medal in 1985, when he was not yet 15 years old).

Foundation for specialized high school system

At the ceremony, teacher Nguyen Vu Luong, Chairman of the Science and Training Council of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, who has been associated with the General Specialized Block since its inception, shared: "Unlike other schools, the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences is selected from excellent students across the country, so the students are very good. They are also always proud of the HSGS logo on their shirts, HSGS is the abbreviation of the phrase "already excellent students".

According to Mr. Nguyen Vu Luong, the above records are all proof of one of the four pillars that make up the reputation of the High School for Natural Sciences. The four pillars include: students with good abilities; many good and dedicated teachers; advanced training programs and scientific and effective education organization and management; and a long tradition.

During the ceremony, a former student, Mr. Le Van Tuan (class of 1987 - 1990), now Director of the Department of Radio Frequency, Ministry of Science and Technology, also said that generations of students of the school are very proud and grateful not only for the knowledge but also for many other intangible values brought by this prestigious school.

"This is not something that every school has and can give to its students. The school's reputation recognized by society is a valuable asset for each former student when entering life. It is like a certificate, an invisible badge certifying the personality and capacity of each student," said Mr. Tuan.

The beginning of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences was a specialized math class (38 students) opened in September 1965, at the Thai Nguyen evacuation area of Hanoi University. The Government's permission to open this special class laid the foundation for the specialized education model in Vietnam - a place to discover and nurture students with outstanding talent in mathematics, and then other basic science fields.

From that first seed, specialized blocks were born one after another: physics (1985), chemistry (1992), biology (1998), math expanded to math - information technology (1993). In 2010, the High School for Natural Sciences was officially established.

Over the past 60 years, the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences has not only been a place to nurture the scientific dreams of tens of thousands of students, but also a "launching pad" that has helped many generations grow up and shine in the international arena. Famous Vietnamese scientists such as Professor Ngo Bao Chau (Fields Medal 2010), Professor Dam Thanh Son (Dirac Prize 2018)... are all former students of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences.
