It is undeniable that famous artists appearing in a film project will help filmmakers sell tickets more easily, but their presence in a series of consecutive films creates the opposite effect.

In theaters To be meet an acquaintance
Vietnamese cinema has dozens of films released in theaters every year, of which, the number of films with good revenue is not much. Many large investment projects but have to suffer heavy losses up to tens of billions of dong. Therefore, inviting stars to "sell tickets" seems to be an effective way to attract the attention of the audience, creating a better media effect.
That is the reason why recently, a series of films have been rehashing actors who are too familiar to the audience. For example, the film “The Bride of a Rich Family” continues to “use” the couple Le Giang - Uyen An as mother and daughter. Before that, this couple also played mother and daughter in the film “Mrs. Nu’s House” by Tran Thanh, which achieved impressive box office results.
Actress Le Giang has had 3 roles in movies this year: “Gap lai chi bau”, “Lang giau voi ma”, “Co dau khoi ma”. Le Giang herself admits that she is afraid that the audience will get bored when she appears too much on the big screen, so she hesitates when accepting new movies.
People's Artist Hong Van is also a familiar face on the big screen when participating in the movie "Hai Muoi", followed by "Co dau hoa mon". Not only veteran actors, but also rising young stars like Tuan Tran have appeared frequently on the big screen. Since the beginning of the year, he has played the main role in 3 movies: "Mai", "Mong cua", "Lam gia voi ma".
Uyen An has a role in “The Bride of a Rich Family” - also her second role this year. Sharing with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Uyen An said that before, she acted in a film directed by her brother Tran Thanh. In this comeback, the actress collaborated with Vu Ngoc Dang and hopes to have a new direction for herself.
Exes don't always work.
Taking advantage of familiar faces to the big screen audience inherently helps to guarantee the box office, attracting more attention from the audience. For example, Le Giang participated in 2 films with good revenue: "Gap lai chi bau" which earned nearly 93 billion VND in revenue, "Lang giau voi ma" which earned more than 127 billion VND.
However, there are also many actors who are too familiar and whose roles are repetitive and do not create a good effect on the audience. Among them, Tuan Tran failed with “Claws” when his project only earned about 4 billion VND.
The filmmaker Boldly searching for “new winds” with new faces sometimes has “unexpectedly good” results. Among them, producers and directors who are willing to find new faces such as Ly Hai, Victor Vu or Charlie Nguyen have had many great successes.
Typically, Ly Hai, in addition to the veteran names participating in his project “Lat mat”, often recruits (casts) young actors who are not yet well-known on the big screen. However, many of them have taken advantage of the opportunity and emerged as promising stars. Among them is Ta Lam. Thanks to her charming acting, she has conquered the audience despite not having much name or acting experience on the big screen.
There is no denying the contribution of famous stars, they still have appeal even though they are familiar faces on the big screen. However, if overused, repeating old roles, it can easily have the opposite effect, making the audience bored.
For many years, Vietnamese cinema has been lacking in talented actors with great potential for development. Therefore, reusing familiar faces seems to be the safe choice for filmmakers.
However, it is time for Vietnamese cinema to step out of this comfort zone and boldly exploit and search for new, more potential faces to create good resources for Vietnamese cinema as well as bring "new winds" to the audience.
