The role of artist Le Thi Binh Yen (middle) made the audience cry.
On the morning of June 28 at the Army Theater, Hanoi , the play "Don't Fall" attracted a large audience, opening a journey of more than 90 minutes full of haunting and emotion. The work was composed by Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong, directed by People's Artist Le Hung, and performed by Group 1 of the Army Drama Theater to participate in the 5th National Professional Stage Arts Festival on "The Image of the People's Public Security Soldier".
The staging technique is rich in "hot" layers and full of drama.
Scenes of Son struggling with his addiction, or sitting quietly in an iron frame in a dark house, were staged in a cramped space with horizontal light, creating a feeling of claustrophobia and suffocation. It was also a metaphor for the mental confinement and repression he was experiencing.
The director also cleverly arranged fast scene transitions, combined with music depicting the inner feelings to lead the viewer's emotions from hope to despair, from darkness to light.
The most touching image is Son locking himself in an iron frame to quit drug addiction.
The unique highlight of the literary script is that the author has built a portrait of a People's Police soldier who escaped tragedy and was reborn to be worthy to return to his comrades.
Author Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong chose a different approach: he did not hesitate to expose the weaknesses, mistakes, and dark corners of the People's Police soldier - a familiar image that is often embellished with makeup. There, the selfless dedication is not only in the chase scenes on the street, but also in the internal battle, in the moment of facing one's own breakdown.
One of the most dramatic situations is when Major Son – after infiltrating a drug ring – becomes a real addict. This tragedy reaches its climax when he faces the risk of being fired from the industry due to his lack of courage.
In despair, Son quietly looked back at the Six Teachings of Uncle Ho to the People's Police, deeply feeling the pain of losing himself while performing his duty. He felt guilty towards his martyr father, guilty of being unfilial towards his mother who was always proud of him and loved him. And also the beautiful love with the daughter of the agency's chief, who placed all her trust in him.
Joy broke out when the play "Don't Fall" was cheered and praised by a large audience.
The dramatic situation was pushed to a climax when the leader and his teammates met to discuss and determined that only Son - the one who had fallen - had the ability, connections and perfect cover to track down the transnational drug ring. Because no one else but him could discover the key points in the transportation of goods, this was the tragic knot and at the same time opened up the opportunity to redeem himself, forcing the character Son to commit once again, betting his honor, life, and the fragile trust of his relatives and teammates.
Son's gradual gaining of the trust of the Group's Chairman (performed by artist Nguyen Thi My Linh) was the turning point for him to no longer run away from the past, but to face it, from a "fallen police officer" he returned to the orbit, turning the darkness that had swallowed him into a shield to quit drugs, into a ship sailing out to sea full of light.
Leaders of the Department of Training and the Department of Politics came to watch and cheer for the play "Don't Fall Down"
Audience Voices and Strong Reverberations
Audience member Vu Thu Hang (Bac Tu Liem) shared: "I cried when I saw Son lock himself in the iron frame. That scene did not need any dialogue, just a horizontal light and a heavy breathing were enough to suffocate my emotions."Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung (Mai Dich) commented: "I have never seen a play in which police officers are portrayed so fiercely. They are not supermen, they are also scared and weak, but still overcome for the community. The actors are really brave and act realistically."
The young actors of the Army Drama Theater are loved by the audience.
The actors performed very delicately, full of emotions, bringing to the audience the sublimation of the literary script and above all, the sincerity in the way of telling, the way of sowing thoughts in each of the audience's feelings.
