How do eel breeding in Hau Giang attract many people to come and see, and grow rice well?

After returning from working abroad, Mr. Le Hoang Lam chose to start a business with an artificial eel breeding model.

It was not an easy journey, because there were not many techniques and experiences in raising eels. Without the efforts, determination to learn and the support of relatives, the honest farmer in Hamlet 10, Vi Trung Commune would have achieved initial success with his passion.

Recalling the process of starting a business, Mr. Lam said that after a period of researching effective economic models, he realized that eel is a seafood that is very popular in the market because of its high nutritional value.

So in early 2020, he decided to choose the eel breeding model to start his business, the first step was to raise eels using industrial feed (no mud).

However, they do not have a firm grasp of the techniques to apply in practice. Lack of experience, followed by poor quality of the breed due to purchasing from many wild fishing sources of the people, or domesticated natural eel breed is not guaranteed, so after stocking, the loss rate is too high.

Undaunted and passionate, from those eels he selected 500 parent eels to produce eel breed.

At that time, he had no experience or technique, so he spent time researching and learning more about techniques from the commune's Agricultural Extension officers, on the internet, newspapers, radio, and eel breeding models.

This time, he was initially successful but the results were not high, so he was even more determined to overcome the difficulties and continue to research to perfect the breeding process. While raising and gaining experience, his eel breeding model initially showed positive signs. The hatching rate was quite high.

Currently, his family's eel breeding area is 17 tanks, including 3 newly expanded tanks, each tank is from 20 - 50 m2.

Mr. Lam added that with nearly 5,000 parent eels breeding, in recent years each breeding season his family has produced and sold to the market at least 50,000 to more than 200,000 eel seeds, eels breed 3-4 times a year, the price of eel powder is 600 VND/eel; the price per cage (1000 eels/kg) is 1,800 VND/eel.

Total revenue for each batch is from 90,000,000 - 360,000,000 VND, after deducting expenses, each batch brings in profit from 45,000,000 - 180,000,000 VND.

Mr. Lam added that to successfully breed eels, the source of parent eels should be purchased from households in different places to avoid inbreeding and the eels when purchased must be at least 10 months old and weigh from 30g to 100g. The stocking density is 8-10 fish/m2, do not arrange too densely because when breeding, the eels will stir up the nest and cause the soil in the tank to collapse.

He also openly continued, in the near future he will continue to expand a few more eel breeding tanks on his land to meet the current market demand. Because currently he does not have enough eel seed to supply to the outside when there are orders.

Despite many difficulties, Mr. Lam still persevered in learning and summarizing experiences to achieve the success he has today. He is willing to provide technical support to people who want to raise eels to increase their income, contribute to poverty reduction, and promote local economic development.
