US President Donald Trump announced that he does not recognize the treaty that defines the border between the US and Canada, and expressed his intention to renegotiate the agreement.

In a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President Trump said he did not consider the treaty defining the border between the United States and Canada to be valid, according to The New York Times on March 7. The treaty, signed in 1908, established the international border between Canada and the United States.

President Trump has expressed a desire to renegotiate the border agreement, but has not given further explanation. He has also indicated that he would review agreements on the shared use of lakes and rivers between the two countries. The US leader has previously expressed interest in this issue.

Mr. Trump’s remarks have caused great concern among Canadian officials. In particular, President Trump recently suggested that he could use economic power to turn Canada into the 51st state of the United States. However, the US president affirmed that he does not consider force as an option for potential annexation of Canada.

The US and Canada have recently escalated their trade war. On March 4, Mr. Trump announced a new 25% tax on goods from Mexico and Canada. Explaining his tariff move, President Trump argued that Canada's efforts to limit illegal immigration and fentanyl into the US were not enough.

Trump on March 7 criticized what he called Canada’s extremely high tariffs on dairy and lumber, saying his administration would likely soon impose reciprocal tariffs on goods from Canada, according to Reuters. However, Trump granted a one-month exemption to the auto industry, which has links across Canada, the United States and Mexico at the request of Washington manufacturers.

Meanwhile, Canadian officials on March 7 affirmed that they will maintain the initial retaliatory tariffs on US goods. This steadfast stance reflects the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries, as well as Canada's determination to reduce its dependence on the US, according to AFP.
