OpenAI releases new AI tool that can act as a researcher

American artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI on February 3 announced a new AI tool capable of acting as an in-depth analytical researcher.

The information was released in the context of DeepSeek's (China) new AI technology that has made Silicon Valley crazy with its high performance and low cost, prompting American developers to act faster, according to AFP.

The tool, called “Deep Research,” will be available to some paying customers through OpenAI’s online chatbot, ChatGPT. It’s designed to handle time-consuming online research, like complex scientific questions. It can also analyze keywords, images, and online files uploaded by users to analyze and evaluate them into in-depth reports.

OpenAI compared the new feature to a research analyst, saying it can perform tasks in “tens of minutes” that would take a human hours to complete.

"Deep Research is OpenAI's next agent that can work independently for you – you give it a prompt and ChatGPT will find, analyze and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst," OpenAI said in a statement, according to AFP.

However, OpenAI also warns that Deep Research is still in its early stages and may be prone to information errors. It may also have difficulty distinguishing false information from accurate information. The research tool is also "computationally intensive," according to OpenAI.

Deep Research is the second AI agent that OpenAI will release in 2025. Last month, OpenAI launched its multi-purpose AI assistant, Operator, which can perform tasks on the web on behalf of users. Operator can 'see' and 'interact' with a web browser like a human. It can perform actions such as typing, clicking, scrolling, and even understand what is displayed on the screen.
