Petrolimex pioneers in E10 biofuel business in Ho Chi Minh City

From August 1, 2025, Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex/Group) will pilot the sale of E10 Biofuel (E10 gasoline) at 36 Gas Stations in Ho Chi Minh City (before the merger) to evaluate the market and the possibility of practical implementation.

Petrolimex continues to affirm its pioneering role in biofuel business and building a clean energy ecosystem with E10 gasoline products.

The “green” impact of E10 biofuel

Not only contributing to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, E10 gasoline also shows many outstanding advantages in engine operation and environmental protection.
E10 gasoline is a finished gasoline product blended from mineral gasoline derived from fossil fuels along with biofuels, in which fuel alcohol is blended at a certain ratio. Specifically: according to the regulations in QCVN 01:2022/BKHCN on gasoline, diesel fuel and biofuels, E10 gasoline is biofuel with a fuel alcohol content of 9-10% by volume.

According to domestic and international studies, ethanol has a high oxygen content, which helps improve the combustion process of the fuel mixture; therefore, E10 gasoline can help reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by up to 20% compared to traditional mineral gasoline. Reduced emissions mean a reduction in the risk of air pollution and the greenhouse effect - one of the main causes of global climate change.

Not only beneficial to the environment, E10 gasoline is also considered an engine-friendly fuel. Ethanol has a high Octane number (over 100), when mixed with traditional gasoline, it helps increase the Octane number of E10 gasoline; this creates conditions for the combustion process in the combustion chamber to take place more evenly, thoroughly and stably, increasing power efficiency and limiting the phenomenon of premature detonation - a cause of damage to the engine.

Clean fuel, green consumption

Currently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is consulting to submit to the Government a roadmap for using E10 gasoline to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fulfilling the commitment to balance net emissions by 2050, expected to be implemented from January 1, 2026.

Research results from state-level projects and international organizations such as ACEA (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers) all confirm that E10 gasoline is completely compatible with current gasoline engines, including old generation engines.

Currently, more than 60 countries commonly use E10 gasoline; many countries and territories, such as the US and Europe, have issued laws requiring the use of fuels blended with pure biofuels.

Currently, the alcohol ratio in biofuel tends to increase. Since 2018, countries in the region such as China and the Philippines have 100% switched to trading only one type of gasoline, E10 biofuel; mineral gasoline is banned from trading at retail gasoline stores (CHXD) and is only allowed to be used as an ingredient to blend E10 biofuel.

At the recent 6-month review conference on the situation of petroleum supply to the market and directions and tasks for the last 6 months of 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued strong instructions on increasing the use of biofuel, especially E10 gasoline, gradually replacing mineral gasoline. The transition to using E10 gasoline is an important step in the roadmap to implement emissions according to the Government 's commitment.

Petrolimex: Green transformation roadmap starts from gas stations

To effectively implement the roadmap for blending and using E10 gasoline as planned, the Ministry of Industry and Trade requires relevant units to develop synchronous groups of solutions such as: Supporting domestic ethanol prices to stabilize supply and reduce the cost of E5/E10 gasoline; Completing the system of standards and technical regulations for E10 gasoline; Strengthening community communication; Encouraging businesses to expand the biofuel distribution system, especially in rural, mountainous and island areas...

With Petrolimex's strategic goal by 2035 "To become the leading energy group in Vietnam in green, clean, high-quality, environmentally friendly energy products based on 4.0 technology and comprehensive digital transformation". Biofuel trading is an important part of the energy transition orientation, Petrolimex is upgrading retail infrastructure and expanding the fuel ethanol blending network. At the same time, strengthening coordination with domestic and foreign ethanol production units to ensure a stable supply, serving biofuel business activities in a sustainable manner.

In parallel with the biofuel business, Petrolimex is researching new energy solutions such as hydrogen and some renewable fuels, in line with the energy transition trend and emission reduction requirements. Within the framework of strategic cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Group has set a goal of building a roadmap to implement emissions according to the Government's commitment.

Speaking about biofuel development, Mr. Tran Ngoc Nam - Member of the Board of Directors, Deputy General Director of Petrolimex expressed his absolute support for the policy of deploying E10 gasoline and said: The Group plans to pilot E10 gasoline trading at its affiliated gas stations in Ho Chi Minh City (before the merger) from August 1, 2025. The goal is to evaluate market response, consumer behavior and the technical response level of the distribution system.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Nam said that the E10 gasoline business requires serious preparation of infrastructure, technology, specialized tanks for fuel alcohol and close coordination from oil refineries. Therefore, Petrolimex proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade soon give instructions on the implementation progress, so that key traders can proactively invest and convert technical systems, and at the same time propose to adjust some technical standards of the current TCVN to suit the mineral gasoline source on the international market and similar to the technical standard requirements in the region.

Switching to biofuel, specifically E10 gasoline, is not only an inevitable step in environmental protection, building a green economy, and implementing emissions according to the Government's commitment, but also a strategic solution to ensure energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote green consumption.
