PGA Tour redistributes prize money for season-ending tournament series

(Dan Tri) - On July 3, the world's leading prestigious professional golf tournament system, the PGA Tour, announced a new way to distribute prize money for the FedEx Cup play-off season finale tournament series.

The FedEx Cup Play-offs are a series of three tournaments that conclude the season on the PGA Tour (a prestigious professional golf tournament system for men, equivalent to the Masters tournaments in tennis), including the Wyndham Championship, BMW Championship and Tour Championship.

The top 60 golfers from the 2024-2025 season will advance to the Wyndham Championship. The top 30 from the Wyndham Championship will then advance to the BMW Championship.

Next, the top finishers at the BMW Championship will advance to the Tour Championship finals, which will determine the overall season champion.

The total prize money for the entire series of 3 FedEx Cup playoffs is approximately 100 million USD (more than 2,620 billion VND). Of which, the first 20 million USD (more than 524 billion VND) will be awarded to the 10 golfers with the highest rankings at the Wyndham Championship. This includes 10 million USD (more than 262 billion VND) for the golfer with the highest ranking.

Immediately after that, the PGA Tour will award another 22.925 million USD (more than 600.7 billion VND) to 30 golfers participating in the BMW Championship. Of which, 5 million USD (more than 131 billion VND) will be given to the golfer who wins this tournament.

The final FedEx Cup playoff event, the Tour Championship, will see nearly $57.8 million awarded to the top-ranked golfers, including $10 million for the overall champion.

In total, the golfer who wins three consecutive tournaments in the FedEx Cup playoff series this season will receive 25 million USD (about 655 billion VND). This amount is equivalent to the amount given to the winner of the FedEx Cup playoff last season.

However, there is a difference: last season, a golfer only needed to win the Tour Championship to “grab” the full 25 million USD mentioned above. This season, a golfer who wants to win the full 25 million USD must win all 3 tournaments in the series.

In addition, the PGA Tour system also announced that the top 10 golfers at the Tour Championship (ie the top players of the entire season) will receive an additional 40 million USD (about 1,048 billion VND) from an investment fund.

However, the PGA Tour has not yet clarified how this $40 million will be divided among the golfers in the top 10. Most likely, as usual, the champion will receive the majority of the above amount, about 40-50% of the total $40 million mentioned above.

This means that if a golfer is successful this season, the prize money for that male athlete will be very large. This is a move by the PGA Tour to regain the attraction of this competition system, in the face of strong competition from the LIV Golf system (invested and operated by Saudi Arabian billionaires).
