“I feel like I’m back home,” Mourinho said in an interview on September 29. “I’ve coached Tottenham, Manchester United and Inter Milan here. But I’m no longer a Chelsea player. Now I’m a red player – a Benfica player – and I want to win.”
The Portuguese coach stressed that Chelsea will play an attacking game to earn three points after losing to Bayern Munich in the opening match, while Benfica will have to defend solidly to hope to make a difference. “Benfica’s opponents are Chelsea, Real Madrid and Newcastle, all of which are tough games. We have to get points tomorrow,” added Mourinho.
Mourinho had two glorious terms with Chelsea, winning a total of 6 major titles from 2004 to 2007, including 2 Premier League titles and 1 FA Cup.
After spells at Inter and Real Madrid, the Portuguese returned to London in 2013 and went on to lead Chelsea to the 2014/15 Premier League title before leaving at the end of 2015.
When asked about the possibility of being booed by Chelsea fans when appearing at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho appeared confident: "I don't think they will whistle. When I walk on the street, they still ask to take photos and chat very friendly."
Since returning to Benfica earlier this month, Mourinho has helped the club maintain an unbeaten run after three matches. The reunion between Mourinho and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge promises to be full of emotions.
