Many animals in the Red Book were discovered through camera traps at Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

On August 11, a representative of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board said that through camera traps, authorities have discovered many animal species listed in the Red Book at Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (Quang Tri province).

Accordingly, through analyzing 186,183 images at 120 trapping stations, researchers discovered 64 species, including 34 bird species, 6 primate species, 5 ungulate species, 6 civet species, 2 weasel species, 2 weasel species and other species including: striped rabbit, wild cat, squirrel, pangolin, Truong Son rock rat, porcupine, bamboo rat, don, mouse. Notably, among these, there are 38 species recorded in the Red Book as endangered, precious, rare and in need of protection.

According to the assessment, the specific number cannot be determined yet, but researchers and conservationists have drawn a map of the species, monitored and expanded the range of trapping; at the same time, using AI technology to analyze location, area, and living habits. It is expected that from now until the end of 2025, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park will have another round of camera trap collection, images and documents will be collected and analyzed to record new rare animal species and assess their living conditions.

Recording images of rare animals in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park not only affirms the special biodiversity value of the area, but also shows the effectiveness of conservation and ecological monitoring work in Phong Nha - Ke Bang, contributing to raising public awareness of the importance of nature protection. World Natural Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has an area of ​​123,326 hectares, including three sub-zones: Strictly protected sub-zone (100,296 hectares), ecological restoration sub-zone (19,619 hectares) and administrative service sub-zone (3,411 hectares).

Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park also recorded 2,954 plant species belonging to 1,007 genera, 198 families, 62 orders, 11 classes, 6 phyla. Of which, 112 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book, 121 species are listed in the IUCN Red Book. In addition, this place also recorded 1,399 animal species belonging to 835 genera, 289 families; of which 84 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book, 110 species are listed in the World Red Book.
