The meeting is the latest in a series of high-level contacts between officials from both countries, possibly paving the way for a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. Jake Sullivan and Wang Yi last met in May.

Meanwhile, Antony Blinken became the first US Secretary of State to visit China in five years during his visit in June. Shortly after these visits, three other senior US officials also visited Beijing for meetings. However, Chinese officials have yet to travel to Washington to continue the discussions.

Recently, President Biden expressed disappointment that President Xi Jinping did not attend the G20 Summit in India.

However, he stressed that “it will be necessary to meet with Mr. Xi Jinping.” It is expected that the two US-China leaders will have the opportunity to discuss with each other at the Asia -Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in San Francisco next November.

A week ago, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Secretary of State Antony Blinken expected to welcome his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi between now and the end of 2023, whether or not Wang attended the UN General Assembly session.

Echoing President Joe Biden’s stance, the official said the White House boss hopes to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this fall. “We believe there is no substitute for direct dialogue between leaders. So we will continue to work toward that possibility,” Miller said.

China has previously hinted that any meeting between Mr Xi and Mr Biden in San Francisco would depend on whether the US is “sincere enough”.
