According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the operation was not intended to harm patients, medical staff, or residents at the hospital. Prior to the operation, efforts were made to evacuate sick and homeless residents from Al-Shifa.
The IDF said it had opened a special passageway and informed the hospital administration in advance of the time of the IDF's entry into the hospital complex. During the operation, incubators, medical equipment, and nutritional food for children were delivered to the hospital. The IDF also said the Israeli army had provided 300 liters of fuel to Al-Shifa Hospital on November 12, but Hamas prevented the health care facility from receiving it.
After fighting street battles with Hamas gunmen, Israeli forces surrounded Al-Shifa, Gaza's largest hospital, which treats more than 650 patients and shelters 7,000 displaced Gazans. Israel accuses Hamas of having its headquarters in the complex, a charge Hamas denies.
On the same day, according to Sputnik news agency, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said there were about 1 million children trapped in the Gaza Strip, many of whom were missing.
