Sony is preparing to enter the 200MP camera sensor race for smartphones, marking the first time the Japanese brand has challenged Samsung's monopoly in this segment.
According to a leak from Digital Chat Station (DCS), Sony's first 200MP sensor, called the IMX09E, is expected to be commercialized on the Lytia LYT-900 series. This is a 1/1.12-inch sensor, larger than Samsung's ISOCELL HP2 (1/1.4-inch), while also providing 0.7µm individual pixels and built on a 22nm process.
The highlight of this sensor is the Hybrid Frame HDR capability with an ultra-wide dynamic range exceeding 100dB, combined with significantly improved light sensitivity. In addition, the sensor also supports optical zoom in the sensor at 2x and 4x, for image quality with almost no data loss (lossless zoom).
It is expected that the IMX09E will appear on the flagship smartphones OPPO Find X9 Ultra and Vivo X300 Ultra in the near future. Some rumors suggest that Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra may also be equipped with this sensor, but this information has now been denied.
On the rival side, Samsung's most advanced 200MP sensor is currently the ISOCELL HP2, which was launched with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The HP2 has a size of 1/1.4 inches, 0.6µm pixels, and integrates Smart-ISO Pro (iDCG) and Dual Slope Gain (DSG) technology to improve light processing, but the company has not clearly announced the dynamic range in dB. Even the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra is expected to continue using this type of sensor.
If the leaks are accurate, in terms of specifications, Sony's 200MP sensor could offer a big advantage thanks to its larger sensor size, promising sharp, detailed shots and superior light processing. However, actual performance still needs to be verified when the product is officially launched.
With Sony preparing to join the game, Samsung may be forced to research and develop a new generation of 200MP sensors with larger sizes, even reaching the 1-inch threshold, to maintain its leading position in the high-end smartphone market.
