Young literary power of Ho Chi Minh City before the opportunity to break through

Not simply an activity within the framework of the first “Ho Chi Minh City Literature and Arts Days”, the discussion “Young Southern Literature” organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports and the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association on October 21, is once again an opportunity to identify the young writing force in Ho Chi Minh City.

Precious relays

In recent years, with its position as a dynamic and friendly city, Ho Chi Minh City has continuously attracted immigrants. This has helped the Ho Chi Minh City literary community to be regularly supplemented with new faces. If after the country's reunification, the 6X and 7X generations were considered the young writing generation of Ho Chi Minh City at that time, now the next generation is the 8X, 9X and more recently, Gen Z, Gen Alpha...

In the field of literature alone, in Ho Chi Minh City there are constantly playgrounds and competitions for young authors to test their abilities and affirm their talents. These include the New Pen Poetry Award, the 20-Year-Olds Literary Creation Campaign, the Literary Creation Campaign for Children, the Ho Chi Minh City National University Youth Literature Award (starting its fourth season), the annual Youth Literature Award of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, etc.

Along with that, there are writing camps and creative camps dedicated to young writers. Most recently, at the end of August this year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City National University organized a writing camp "Young Literary Creative Experience Activities 2025" on Thieng Lieng Island (Thanh An Commune, Ho Chi Minh City) for 21 campers from provinces and universities across the country. Most of them are young people who have won high prizes at the Young Literature Awards. During the 4-day-3-night journey, in addition to experiencing real life in Thanh An Island Commune, young writers also met and listened to previous generations of writers such as Nhat Chieu, Duong Thanh Truyen, Bich Ngan, Phan Hoang share their writing experiences. These are valuable support sessions for young people on their first steps in literature.

Waiting for a breakout

According to writer Bui Anh Tan, Vice President of the Union of Literature and Arts Associations of Ho Chi Minh City - Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association has always accompanied and encouraged young writers. Each term, it organizes a conference for young writers, gathering young people with a passion for pursuing literature who are living and studying in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, every year, the association holds a writing camp to nurture young writers.

“However, the reality is that the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association is lacking in seminars. For writers, seminars are very important, they are where authors meet each other, meet previous generations to exchange experiences, discuss outstanding literary issues, and thereby support and encourage each other to write together. In the coming time, we will try to organize many seminars aimed at young people. Because young people are the future with creativity and new vitality, we expect a lot from them,” said writer Bui Anh Tan.

Writing is a lonely journey, writers are always alone with their writings, even though there are many attractive things outside. Therefore, it requires young writers to be brave and make a lot of effort to overcome. But having said that, I still have high hopes for young people, high hopes for the love of literature to be greater than anything, becoming a strong motivation for you to hold a pen. I hope you will be confident, boldly embark on a literary career, success or failure is a matter of the future, but first, write and complete the work that you cherish.

As a student majoring in Literature, Hoang Minh Duc (born in 2007, currently studying at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) is very interested in young literature from Ho Chi Minh City. According to Minh Duc, some young authors such as Giai Du (born in 2001), Cao Viet Quynh (born in 2008)... have attracted young readers because of their closeness and novelty in both content and art.

“When reading the works of young writers, I hope to find everyday, simple, and familiar issues in the lives of young people like us. And as a young reader, I really hope to see young authors break away from the content lines of previous authors, deeply exploiting hot issues in modern life such as finding a job, trying to assert oneself, and the journey of young people finding a place in an era of too many changes. Those are the topics that I, as well as many of my friends, hope that authors will exploit as a way to guide us on our journey of discovery and self-understanding,” Hoang Minh Duc shared at the discussion.
