Training on rice seed production techniques for farmers

This is a program within the training plan for farmers in addition to the model "Building a model of Cooperatives (HTX) to organize rice seed production in association with Enterprises consuming products in the Mekong Delta region" under the Central Agricultural Extension Project for the period 2023 - 2024.

The Central Seed Group (Vinaseed) is the unit in charge of implementing the Project.

Vinaseed representative introduces the rice seed production linkage model.

"The model of cooperatives organizing rice seed production in association with enterprises consuming products" has been implemented in Long An province from 2022 to present.

Specifically, in the 2023 - 2024 Winter-Spring crop, Vinaseed has coordinated with the Long An Provincial Agricultural Service Center (DVNN) to implement a model with an area of ​​more than 300 hectares of Dai Thom 8 rice variety production at the original and certified seed levels in Tan Thanh district and Kien Tuong town.

At the training class, Engineer Tran Minh Tam - Long An Agricultural Service Center guided farmers on the process of producing purebred and certified rice seeds, combined with the application of technical advances in rice cultivation from field preparation, sowing, care, decontamination, harvesting and post-harvest preservation.

In particular, it should be noted that when producing rice varieties, the weed removal step is very important and must be carried out throughout the production season; students are instructed to perform and identify weeds in the production field, distinguish between weeds of different varieties, different types, weedy rice types and how to control weedy rice...

Students visited the production model of 8-level certified Dai Thom rice seeds at Dong Dung Agricultural Cooperative (Go Ot Hamlet, Tuyen Thanh Commune, Kien Tuong Town, Long An).

In addition, to monitor and control the production situation; control product quality; trace the origin of crop products... MSc. Tran Hong Quyen - Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Agricultural Product Quality Management, introduced the process and procedures for granting growing area codes for rice variety production areas.

To be granted a growing area code, farmers must produce according to safety standards and keep a field diary during the cultivation process. Growing area coding brings many practical benefits to farmers such as: standardizing the process of caring for and managing crops, managing the growing area, providing standard care procedures; warning about disease situations, planning care, and estimating productivity...

Each growing area code is not issued indefinitely, but periodically, the competent authority will have to conduct supervision to ensure that the growing area is still being well managed, meeting the requirements. In case it does not meet the requirements according to the regulations, the code will be revoked.

To make it easier for farmers to absorb knowledge, the content of the training course is divided into many specific topics.

During the training class, the trainees exchanged and discussed enthusiastically. The knowledge was well absorbed by the trainees, and they could immediately apply it to their family production, while also instructing and promoting it to farmers in neighboring areas to follow.

From there, the "Cooperative model for organizing rice seed production in association with product consumption enterprises" can be expanded further in the coming time, contributing to stable production development and increasing profits for farmers.

Sharing about the policies for farmers participating in the project, Mr. Le Van Phu - Deputy Director of Vinaseed Co Do Branch said that farmers will be supported with 50% of the price of the first-line rice seeds; trained, instructed and provided with technical documents on rice seed production; advance production costs of 3 million VND/ha; the company also supports 100% of the bags when harvesting; the purchase price for transplanted rice is added 1,000 VND/kg compared to the market price. In addition, producers are also supported with the cost of weighing and loading rice onto the means of transport of 65 VND/kg.

Sharing about the results of the model implementation, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam - Director of Dong Dung Cooperative said: In the 2023 - 2024 Winter-Spring crop, the Cooperative will implement a model of 50 hectares of production of Dai Thom 8-level certified variety, the entire area is transplanted by machine, currently the rice crop is in the flowering - firming stage. The expected yield in this crop is about 7 - 8 tons/ha, the profit is 5 - 7 million VND/ha higher than commercial rice production.

In particular, in addition to being supported in production costs, farmers are also regularly supported by Vinaseed's technical staff in the technical process of seed production, so they feel secure when participating in the project.
